STILLWATER – In its first marquee dual matchup of the season, the No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team ran away from No. 7 Virginia Tech, 34-9, Thursday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The win maintained Oklahoma State's perfect 6-0 record and handed the Hokies their first loss at 3-1.
The Cowboys won eight of 10 matches on the night, highlighted by six bonus-point outings and three wins over Hokies ranked in the top 10. As a team, OSU racked up 25 takedowns and surrendered just three as it surpassed 30 team points for the sixth dual in a row. No other Cowboy squad has reached that mark in each of its opening six duals of a season since 1996-97.
"Just really happy with the guys," head coach David Taylor said. "I think we're getting better every week. It's just cool to see the stuff that we're working on in practice, and the guys going out and doing it. We talked about just wrestling the way you want to wrestle, and these guys are doing that."
As he often does, Troy Spratley set the tone for the night in a top-five matchup against No. 4 Eddie Ventresca at 125 pounds. Spratley held a 4-1 lead late in the third period, but secured a takedown, two swipes and a riding time point in the final seconds to seal a 10-1 major decision and put his team on the scoreboard first. Now sitting at 11-1, Spratley has beaten three wrestlers ranked inside the top five this season.
At 133 pounds, Reece Witcraft improved to 9-2 on the year and 4-0 in dual competition behind a 14-4 major decision over Dillon Campbell, which set up another good bout between No. 4 Tagen Jamison and No. 13 Sam Latona. Despite two All-America honors on Latona's resume, it was Jamison who controlled the match through takedowns in the second and third periods, eventually leading to an 8-0 major decision and 12-0 advantage for the Cowboys.
Virginia Tech closed the gap momentarily thanks to a pin from defending national champion Caleb Henson and a wild 20-15 decision by No. 14 Rafael Hipolito, but Cameron Amine got the Cowboys back on track as he handled No. 29 Mac Church for a 7-1 win. Oklahoma State put its foot on the gas from there, winning each of the final four matches and scoring 19 team points in the process.
Perhaps the performance of the night came from 174-pounder Dean Hamiti Jr., who looked unstoppable in his 20-5 technical fall over fourth-ranked Lennox Wolak. Hamiti scored five takedowns in the match alongside a reversal and three near fall points, his last one coming just before the second-period buzzer to finish it. The performance was tied for the highest-ranked win of Hamiti's career and improved his season record to 11-0. Dustin Plott followed suit at 184 pounds, beating Sam Fisher by a 20-5 technical fall thanks to a takedown in the final seconds of the third period.
Another exciting finish was seen at 197 pounds, as Luke Surber took down No. 9 Andy Smith, 4-1, in sudden victory. There, Smith was in deep on a shot, but Surber scrambled his way out of it and eventually secured the winning takedown to avenge his loss to Smith from the CKLV Invitational. Surber is now 12-1 this season with three wins over wrestlers ranked in the top 10.
Heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson closed out the night in style, putting Hunter Catka on his back in the opening period for his team-leading fifth pin of the season. Through 11 matches, Hendrickson has produced a perfect record and nine bonus-point wins, all while extending his winning streak in dual competition to 41.
Oklahoma State will have a short break from competition until it hosts Air Force on Friday, January 3, at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
