Doing Your Homework: Cowgirls Prepping for Spring, Puerto Rico Classic
January 29, 2024 | Cowgirl Golf
Golf is like a test.
With proper practice, studying and extra time in the classroom – there's a strong chance to make your mark in the grade book. However, if you enter the exam room strictly off an all-nighter – you might find yourself in some trouble. The same can apply to team qualifiers.
"You can't just cram for it the night before," head coach Greg Robertson said. "It's probably not going to work out very well for you."
As the Cowgirls return from a 105-day hiatus, they will look to take their offseason preparations to the course as they head to the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 4-6. With its fall campaign behind them and its sights set on the spring, the reigning Big 12 Champions will look to make an impact at The Grand Reserve Golf Club with a cast of 10 looking to crack the lineup.
After preparing over the offseason and enduring a frigid winter break across nationwide and international lines, many Cowgirls returned to Stillwater with reps in the weight room and practice at Karsten Creek's heated indoor driving bays.
"I've been happy with the work that they've been putting into indoor work," Robertson said. "Even though we've had some tough weather to deal with, they're battling through that and have gotten a lot of work done. Hopefully, that will contribute to some good play coming up soon.
"Watching them hit balls indoors has allowed us to get an understanding of some of the things that they were working on, especially if they went home. If they were working with their personal coach, it helps us see what it is that they're working on and what their fundamentals look like to this point."
Closing out the fall with a 15-under 273 – its lowest round vs. par since OSU earned its 100th tournament title at the 2021 Sam Golden Invitational – consistency will be key for the Cowgirls.
With the trio of back-to-back Big 12 Player of the Year Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, Big 12 All-Tournament selection Clemence Martin and Thitaporn Saithip returning from last year's Big 12 Championship lineup, the Cowgirls shared the spotlight in the fall – sourcing three core contributors in senior Angelica Pfefferkorn and true freshmen Ellie Bushnell and Marta Silchenko. In the starting lineup, all three delivered, with Pfefferkorn posting the lowest round of her career (66), Silchenko winning the Jim West Challenge qualifiers and Bushnell carding two top-20 finishes.Â
In December, Bushnell also earned low amateur honors and a second-place finish at the California State Open, while Bushnell and fellow freshman Sammie Miller competed at the Cactus Collegiate.
New to the lineup this spring, Sifat Sagoo was also welcomed to the Cowgirls. After earning her degree in organizational leadership in December, the former Purdue Boilermaker arrived in Stillwater two weeks ago and has made a great impression.
"I think she has fit in very well," Robertson said. "She is a nice girl who has a great personality and work ethic that fits in nicely with the team. Everything I've seen so far has been positive."
As a former second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2020, Sifat will look to bring her leadership role to the roster alongside seniors Hinson-Tolchard and Pfefferkorn and fifth-years Jenna Solheim and Ashton Begley.
With qualifiers for the Puerto Rico Classic on the horizon, the roster's depth will be on full display as the Cowgirls field their roster.Â
"It's a new season; we'll get out there and see how qualifiers unfold," Robertson said. "It's exciting for us to get a chance to see how things play out.Â
"But, over the course of the semester, it wouldn't surprise me if you see some different lineups because we have a lot of different players that could get in that top five at any time."
