OSU Track & Field Kicks off New Year with Record-Setting Opening at Arkansas Invitational
January 13, 2024 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State indoor track & field hit the track for the first time in 2024 at the Arkansas Invitational Friday, with several Cowboys and Cowgirls setting school records in the process.
Saara Hakanen kicked 2024 off with a bang, tying her own school record in the High Jump after clearing a height of 1.78 meters. Hakanen's performance also gave her the event victory, defeating Louisiana Tech's A'riel Williams in a tiebreaker.
Hakanen's school record was just the first of many on a record-setting day for the Pokes. In the women's 600 Meters, OSU star Gabija Galvydyte broke yet another school record with her time of 1:28.48. She also owns the outdoor 800 Meter school record in addition to being a member of OSU's indoor 4x400 and Distance Medley Relay school-record squads.
Immediately following Galvydyte in the 600 Meters was DJ McArthur on the men's side. McArthur sat behind leader Brandon Battle of Arkansas for much of the race before storming past the Razorback with roughly 100 meters to go to clinch the event victory with his school-record time of 1:16.75.
In the field, Winny Bii refused to be outdone by her teammates on the track as she broke not only the school record, but the Kenyan national record in the Triple Jump with her leap of 13.49 Meters. The previous Kenyan record in the event had stood for nearly 23 years before Bii set the new one Friday. Bii's mark also currently leads the NCAA and will likely qualify her for the NCAA Championships later this season.
Earlier in the day in the 1,000 Meters, Sivan Auerbach and Grace Boone took home third and fifth overall in a loaded field that included several current and former All-Americans. Their times of 2:43.65 and 2:45.08, respectively, rank third and fifth in OSU history.
On the men's side, Alex Stitt took home the individual victory, defeating multiple All-Americans in the process. The reigning Big 12 Runner-Up entered the final lap in third place before blowing past the leaders in the final 50 meters to take the win.
In the men's 60 Meters, Koryee Wyatt dropped a new personal-best time of 6.67 in the prelims to move him up to third on OSU's all-time list behind All-American sprinters John Teeters and Tyreek Hill.
Over in the throws ring, Sam Mason and Zac Robbins swept the top two spots on the podium in the Weight Throw with tosses of 19.91 and 18.03 meters, respectively. Mason's throw bumps his second-ranked mark at OSU up nearly half a meter, where he remains behind only Cowboy Olympian Nick Miller in the event.
On the women's side in the Weight Throw, freshman Rachel Neaves placed second overall in her first career meet with a toss of 17.19 meters, which ranks her ninth in program history.
OSU returns to action in two weeks with another trip to Arkansas for the prestigious Razorback Invitational from Jan. 26-27.
