Cowgirls, Saithip Co-Lead After First Day In San Antonio
May 08, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
SAN ANTONIO – Fourth-seeded Oklahoma State is tied atop the leaderboard with a 7-over 295 after round one at the NCAA San Antonio Regional at TPC San Antonio, while Thitaporn Saithip shot a 2-under 70 to claim a share of the individual lead.
Top-seeded Texas A&M co-leads alongside the Cowgirls, while UCLA's Zoe Campos, GolfStat's ninth-ranked player in the country, is equal with Saithip individually. It was a tight first day on the course, as SMU sits close behind in third at 8-over and three more teams within four strokes of the lead.
"As a team, it's great to get off to a solid start," head coach Greg Robertson said. "We were really happy with the way they played. It's a challenging golf course, and they were tough throughout the day."
Teeing off on hole No. 10, the Cowgirls quickly found their footing on the par-72 course, combining to shoot 2-under before making the turn back to the first hole. As a team, Oklahoma State carded 53 pars and 13 birdies, largely avoiding any high marks, which plagued many other teams in the field.
Saithip utilized a clean front nine and back-to-back birdies late in her round to surge ahead of the field. She was one of just five players to finish the day under-par.
The freshman has now played a dozen consecutive rounds in which her score counted towards the overall team score. After finishing tied for 13th at the Big 12 Championship, Saithip will be looking to continue her momentum for the first tournament victory of her career.
"Tent looked very steady, especially the way she finished her round," Robertson said. "She's a big reason we're in the position we're in right now."
Clemence Martin joined Saithip in the top-10, landing in a tie for sixth after shooting an even-par 72. The sophomore did not surrender a bogey before the turn and sank four birdies on the day, tied for most on the team.
Martin is coming off her best performance of the spring following her top-3 outing at the Big 12 Championship and in good position for back-to-back top-10 finishes.
Juniors Rina Tatematsu and Maddison Hinson-Tolchard rounded out the counting score for OSU after firing rounds of 4-over 76 and 5-over 77, respectively. Tatematsu shined on par-5's, shooting 2-under on such holes, while Hinson-Tolchard paced the team with 13 pars.
Han-Hsuan Yu ended the day tied for 41st with a 6-over 78.
With two rounds left to play, the Cowgirls are aiming to secure their spot in the top-5 of the leaderboard, which would punch their ticket to the NCAA Championship for a third-straight season.
Oklahoma State is scheduled to tee off for the second round tomorrow at 9:06 a.m. CT alongside the Aggies and Mustangs.
Live scoring will once again be available on GolfStat.com, while updates for the Cowgirls will also be on the team's social media as they become available.
