Cowgirls Return to NCAA Championship for Third Straight Season
May 17, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's golf is returning to Scottsdale, Arizona, where it will compete at the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive season, beginning Friday morning. The Cowgirls enter play as the No. 20 seed after earning the fourth-seed at the NCAA San Antonio Regional earlier this month.
The Cowgirls are making the program's 24th appearance at the NCAA Championship to go alongside their five visits to the AIAW Championship, bringing the program's total to 29. OSU's 24 NCAA appearances is 10th-most in the country and second in the Big 12 to Texas' 31.
In a change announced by the NCAA in January, the top five teams from each of the six regional sites qualified for nationals, bumping the field up from 24 finalists to 30. In addition, the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional advanced as well, as 156 total golfers moved on to play in Scottsdale.
The field will play 54 holes of stroke play at Grayhawk Golf Club, a par-72, 6,368-yard layout, before the field is cut in half down to 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on advancing teams. A fourth round will then be played on Monday to crown the individual champion and the top eight finishers, who will advance to the match play bracket.
Both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of match play will be completed Tuesday, with the match play finals commencing on Wednesday.
Oklahoma State owns seven top-5 finishes at NCAAs, including a pair of National Runner-Up performances. The program's first came in 2004, when the team came up just short against UCLA by three strokes. In 2021, head coach Greg Robertson's second season in Stillwater, the Cowgirls reached the match play finals for the first time in program history, but fell to Ole Miss, 4-1-0. The Cowgirls also finished third in their first ever appearance at NCAAs in 1982 and tacked on another in 1989.
Last season, OSU finished 19th after missing the 54-hole cut, but Maddison Hinson-Tolchard won an individual playoff following the third round, allowing her to compete all four days.
Despite finishing no better than fourth throughout the spring regular season schedule, Oklahoma State leaves for Grayhawk with plenty of momentum after sweeping both the team and individual titles at the Big 12 Championship and putting together a solid third-place finish at the NCAA San Antonio Regional. The Cowgirls have compiled five top-3 finishes this season to go with their pair of tournament victories.
Hinson-Tolchard once again leads the Cowgirl lineup in the team's season finale. After winning Big 12 Player of the Year in 2022, the junior has been even better in 2023, leading the team in stroke average, rounds in the 60's and par-or-better rounds. She owns six top-10 outings this season to go along with her Big 12 individual title and has played 56 straight rounds in which her score counted towards the overall score dating back to October of 2021.
While at the Big 12 Championship, Hinson-Tolchard broke the program record for career par-or-better rounds with 51, surpassing the previous mark of 49 set by Kenzie Neisen. Her 71.28 season stroke average also ranks fourth-best ever by a Cowgirl.
Currently ranked No. 15 in the nation by GolfStat, Hinson-Tolchard is the 11th-highest ranked player in the field.
After claiming her second straight top-3 finish at the NCAA San Antonio Regional, Clemence Martin will make her eighth start of the season in Scottsdale. She has finished tied for third three separate times this season, each equal for her best finish as a Cowgirl.
The sophomore is second on the team in stroke average 72.48 and third in rounds in the 60's with five.
Rina Tatematsu is coming off her best performance of the season, finishing fifth at the NCAA San Antonio Regional with rounds of 76-69-70 (-1) 215. The result marked her highest finish of the season and 10th top-10 outing as a Cowgirl.
Thitaporn Saithip returns to the starting lineup for her eighth start of the season. In San Antonio, Saithip put together a top-25 performance with rounds of 70-78-76 (+8) 224. Her opening round 70 gave her the co-lead after day one and was vital in the top-5 team race.
The freshman has been a rock-solid piece for the Cowgirls down the stretch. She boasts a 72.83 scoring average, third on the team, and has played 14 counting rounds in a row.
Han-Hsuan Yu rounds out the Cowgirl lineup for her tenth start of the season. No stranger to the big stage, Yu is making her 10th career appearance in postseason play.
Oklahoma State is scheduled to tee off on hole No. 1 for the first round Friday at 8:32 a.m. CT alongside No. 19 Arizona and No. 21 Virginia.
Live scoring for the tournament will be available at GolfStat.com, while updates for the Cowgirls will also be on the team's social media as they become available.
