Hinson-Tolchard Cracks Top-10 in Latest Palmer Cup Rankings
March 02, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma State women's golfer Maddison Hinson-Tolchard was ranked ninth in the first March Arnold Palmer Cup International Rankings released on Thursday, moving up four spots from her previous ranking of 13th in February.
In the summer of 2023, the Arnold Palmer Cup is set to host some of the game's best women's and men's collegiate players from the United States and their International counterparts. This is the 27th rendition of the Arnold Palmer Cup, and will be held at Laurel Valley Golf Club, located outside Ligonier, Pa., spanning from June 8-10.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), beginning in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament, matching the United States against a team of International players.
In a nod to its prestige, the Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world's greatest courses, including The Old Course at St. Andrews, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course and Cherry Hills. Since 2018, the Palmer Cup is the only major tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
Since the event's inception, over 125 Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on the PGA, DP World or LPGA tours, with more than 75 players claiming over 310 victories, including 2022 major champion Jennifer Kupcho. Additionally, 34 tournament alumni have represented either Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup or Solheim Cup.
Both the USA and International teams shall consist of 12 golfers, with the first six being selected from the top of the final spring Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking. The remaining players will be selected by using five committee picks and one coach's pick.
Using the GolfStat NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
Born in Perth, Australia, Hinson-Tolchard is aiming for a spot on the International squad.
After being named the Big 12 Player of the Year and a WGCA Second Team All-American in 2022, the standout junior has continued her stellar play this season, leading the team in stroke average, rounds in the 60's and par-or-better rounds.
Just recently, Hinson-Tolchard finished tied for sixth at the ICON Invitational at the end of February. There, she carded a 54-hole score of 206, her second-lowest as a Cowgirl. Hinson-Tolchard's performance marked her third top-10 outing of the season and the 10th of her career.
Additionally, she has finished top-20 in all six tournaments this season and played 45 consecutive rounds in which her score qualified towards the overall team score dating back to October of 2021.
Along with her rise in the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking, Hinson-Tolchard has also seen a surge in both the GolfStat NCAA Player Ranking and World Amateur Golf Rankings, currently placing 13th and 78th, respectively.
