Cowgirls Ready For Spring Opener In Bahamas
February 11, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 20 Oklahoma State women's golf is set to open the 2023 spring season on Monday at the Nexus Collegiate at Albany Golf Club in New Providence, Bahamas. The 54-hole tournament will feature 10 teams at the par-72, 6,544-yard layout.
The Cowgirls head to The Bahamas looking to recapture the momentum from their final tournament of the fall when the team took home the trophy at the Jim West Challenge. There, Oklahoma State fired a 9-under 855 en route to a two-stroke win over runner-up SMU.
With the victory, Greg Robertson earned his 10th win as head coach at Oklahoma State and the program's 104th overall.
Throughout the fall, the Cowgirls finished top-3 in three of their four tournaments played, and compiled a 10-2 record against Big 12 opponents, tied for the most wins by any league member.
The playing field at Albany includes Arizona State, Auburn, Duke, LSU, Ole Miss, Minnesota, South Carolina, TCU and Wake Forest. The upcoming week will undoubtedly serve as a strong test for the Cowgirls, as seven of their nine opponents are currently ranked in the top-20 in GolfStat's latest poll.
Standout Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, along with Clemence Martin, will look to lead the Cowgirl lineup once again in their first competition of the new year. On Tuesday, Hinson-Tolchard and Martin were ranked No. 22 and No. 33, respectively, in GolfStat's player poll, making them the highest-ranked duo among all Big 12 foes.
Hinson-Tolchard, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, is coming off a stellar fall season, in which she had a 70.33 scoring average and four rounds in the 60's. Through incredible consistency, Hinson-Tolchard recorded nine rounds of par-or-better and qualified to count in the overall team score in all 12 rounds she played.
The star junior finished top-20 in all four tournaments played, highlighted by a 3rd-place finish at the Illini Invitational, where she fired a career-best 204.
Martin played in just two events in the fall while treating a back injury, but still led the team with a 69.83 scoring average. Her best performance of the season came at the Schooner Fall Classic in September, shooting three straight rounds in the 60's and eventually landing in a tie for 3rd.
Rina Tatematsu will make her fifth start of the season this week after compiling a 72.58 scoring average and going par-or-better in seven of her 12 rounds played in the fall.
Her performance at the Jim West Challenge was instrumental in the Cowgirls' team victory, finishing tied for 11th with a 2-under 214.
Han-Hsuan Yu looks to continue her solid 2022-23 campaign after starting in all four events in the fall. She finished the fall with plenty of momentum following a 7th-place performance at the Jim West Challenge, where she signed off on a season-best 212.
With the result, Yu has two top-10 finishes on the season and six in her last 11 tournaments played.
Senior Hailey Jones rounds out the Cowgirl lineup in The Bahamas. In the fall, Jones recorded a scoring average of 73.11 and adds a wealth of experience having played 78 rounds in her career, second-most on the team.
Cecilie Leth-Nissen will join the Cowgirls this week while playing as an individual. The freshman earned a spot in the starting lineup at the team's season-opener at the Carmel Cup and made two more appearances as an individual throughout the fall.
The Nexus Collegiate is scheduled to tee off Monday morning at 6:45 a.m. CT.
