OSU Indoor Track & Field Opens 2023 with Solid Performance at Arkansas Invitational
January 13, 2023 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Oklahoma State indoor track & field traveled east to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Arkansas Invitational on Friday.
Juan Diego Castro and Gabija Galvydyte highlighted the first meet of the new year by taking home individual victories in the men's and women's 1,000 Meters.
Castro and Alex Stitt dominated the field in the men's 1,000 Meters, taking home first and second place finishes, respectively. Castro's personal-best time of 2:22.58 is the fourth-fastest time in program history. Stitt finished just .24 seconds behind Castro, finishing just a second shy of his school-record time set last season. The pair bested by nearly three seconds overall as they took control of the race late.
Immediately following was the women's 1,000 Meters, where the Cowgirls filled up the leaderboard, claiming four of the top five spots as well as accounting for half of the top 10 overall. Galvydyte led the Cowgirls with a strong and controlled race, finishing with a time of 2:47.00 time, just .20 shy of her personal best in the event. Freshmen Anne Gine Lovnes and Kaylie Politza shined, finishing directly behind Galvydyte with second and third-place finishes overall with times of 2:48.36 and 2:48.43, respectively. Stephanie Moss and Billah Jepkirui rounded out the Cowgirls' successful event with a pair of top-10 finishes.
Bailey Golden led the women in the long jump, earning a second-place finish after posting an indoor personal-best 6.03m jump on her third attempt. Golden already has the second longest leap in program history; by topping it, Golden continues to push toward Ryan Roane's school record 6.09m jump.
Emily Carter placed second in the women's 3,000 Meters with a time of 9:40.23, demolishing her previous best by over 40 seconds. Carter's last maneuver sandwiched her between Texas A&M's Julia Abell and Grace Plain, resulting in a top three decided in less than one second. On the men's side, Grant Wilcox won the first 3,000 Meter race of the day, besting his opponents in a gutsy win by five seconds. Wilcox finished at 8:28.83, besting his personal record by five seconds. His performance landed him an eighth-place spot for the event.
OSU's women pole-vaulters also had a big day, led by Ariadni Adamopoulou, finishing tied for second with a 4.23-meter vault. Anna Airault and Sarah Stair both cleared 3.83 meters, placing them in a tie for fourth-best in program history.
In the men's 600 Meters, DJ McArthur finished third overall with his time of 1:17.71, which surpassed the previous meet record of 1:18.03 set back in 2016. Fellow Cowboys Mehdi Yanouri, EJ Berry and Ty Cook all also cracked the top 10 in the event with finishes of sixth, eighth and tenth, respectively.
Over at the throws arena, Sam Mason placed eighth in the competition in the Weight Throw after a 17.83-meter toss. For the Cowgirls, Hannah Bradford and Johnna Orange put up solid performances as well, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively. Bradford launched the weight 18.84 meters, while Orange hurled the lead ball 16.80 meters, the eighth-longest toss in program history.
