Cowgirls in fifth after first 18 holes of 54-hole tournament
HOCKLEY, Texas ---- On a challenging day for the entire field during the first round of the 2022 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, No. 6 Oklahoma State women's golf's Lianna Bailey was one of just four competitors to finish under par as she carded a 70 on Friday at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas. Bailey's 1-under positioned her in a tie for third after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament at 6,356-yard, par-71 course.
Her opening-round score marked her lowest since shooting a 69 in the second round of the Columbia Classic on Feb. 13 and was her third best of the year.
As a team, the Cowgirls closed the opening round at 11-over in fifth place heading into Saturday. Baylor will head to the weekend in the top position after carding a 4-over while Iowa State and No. 14 Texas are tied for second at 7-over heading into the second 18 holes of competition. Â
OSU found plenty of success on the par-3s on Friday as it finished four-strokes better than the rest of the field on those five holes. Bailey was a big part of this as she finished the par-3s at 1-under with an average score of 2.80.
"We didn't get off to a great start today, but they hung in there and finished pretty strong," head coach Greg Robertson said. "It was a challenging day out there with the wind and course setup. We'll be getting pretty much the same conditions these next couple days, so we can learn a lot from this first round.
"There are a few things that will probably change in how they manage the course over the next two days as far as clubs and lines off the tee. We're looking forward to a couple of competitive days coming up."
Playing alongside Bailey, Rina Tatematsu shot a 2-over 73 to end the day tied for 11th while Han-Hsuan Yu carded 3-over 74 and will head to the weekend tied for 15th.
Rounding out the Cowgirl lineup, Maddison Hinson-Tolchard and Hailey Jones both finished the first round at 7-over and tied for 33rd.
The second round will start Saturday at 8 a.m. with Kansas State, Oklahoma and Kansas grouped while Oklahoma State will hit the course at 9 a.m. with Texas Tech and TCU. The final grouping, scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m., will feature Texas, Iowa State and Baylor.
Fans can follow all the action with live stats on Golfstat and updates on the team's social media accounts as they become available.
Third-day pairings will be determined by the previous day's results with golfers from the three teams at the top of the team standings going out last. An awards ceremony will be conducted following the conclusion of the final round on Sunday.
In addition to the team trophy for the team champion, the top-10 individual finishers at the Big 12 Championship will be recognized as the All-Tournament Team.
