Cowgirls And Lianna Bailey Within Striking Distance Of Big 12 Championship On Sunday
April 23, 2022 | Cowgirl Golf
HOCKLEY, Texas ---- No. 6 Oklahoma State women's golf jumped up to second place on Saturday at the 2022 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship while Lianna Bailey finished the second day at the top of the individual leaderboard after carding a 68 at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas. Bailey, who sits at 4-under through the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament, positioned herself to become OSU's first individual champion since Kenzie Neisen in 2016.
Her round of 68 was her second lowest of the season and fifth lowest of her career. She will head into Sunday's final round as the only golfer in the field under par with a four-stroke lead.
As a team, the Cowgirls finished 8-over on Saturday and will head into Sunday's championship round at 19-over at the 6,356-yard, par-71 course. No. 14 Texas stormed ahead with a 3-over afternoon to head into the final round in first at 10-over while No. 16 Baylor dropped to 21-over for the tournament in third place after carding a 17-over on the second day.
It comes as no surprise to see OSU and the Longhorns at the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes as the two programs have combined to win the tournament 15 times since its inception in 1997 and have won each of the past five Big 12 titles.
Overall, OSU has earned 24 conference titles, including 10 Big 12 Championships – three more than any other league rival.
"The team did a nice job of hanging in there on another day with tough, windy conditions," head coach Greg Robertson said. "Tomorrow will be similar conditions. If they can play solid and play smart and minimize some of the mistakes, it will make for a great finish to this championship."
Alongside Bailey, Han-Hsuan Yu finished the day 7-over for the tournament and tied for 16th place while Maddison Hinson-Tolchard posted back-to-back birdies on the back nine to move into a tie for 20th at 8-over.
Rina Tatematsu shot an 80 to move to 11-over and will start the final round in 30th. Hailey Jones rounded out the lineup for the Cowgirls in a tie for 36th at 13-over.
The third round will start Sunday at 8 a.m. with Kansas State, Kansas and Texas Tech grouped together. The second group will hit the course at 9 a.m. with Iowa State, TCU and Oklahoma. The final grouping, scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m., will feature Texas, Oklahoma State and Baylor.
Fans can follow all the action with live stats on Golfstat and updates on the team's social media accounts as they become available.
In addition to the team trophy for the team champion, the top-10 individual finishers at the Big 12 Championship will be recognized as the All-Tournament Team.
