April 10, 2022 | Cowboy Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas - Oklahoma State's men's tennis team came out on the short end of a down-to-the-wire, 4-3Â setback against Texas Tech this afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.Â
ÂWith the loss, the Cowboys fell to 11-9 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play on the year.Â
ÂThe match began with doubles action where Max Verboven and Alex Garcia battled but were clipped by Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier on court two, 6-2.Â
ÂOklahoma State's undefeated doubles duo suffered their first loss of the season. No. 26 Seb Nothhaft and Tyler Zink kept play tight on court one against Piotr Pawlak and Isaac Arevalo before eventually falling, 6-3, to give Texas Tech the early 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.Â
ÂThe momentum carried over into singles action, where the Red Raiders collected the next two consecutive singles points. Leighton Allen was first to fall on court four with Dimitrios Azoidis emerging victorious in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Seb Nothhaft kept play gritty on court three as he squared off with Texas Tech's Olle Wallin, who would secure a 6-3, 6-3 victory.Â
ÂTyler Zink swung momentum for Oklahoma State and was able to stifle Texas Tech's run. The opening set proved the pair were evenly matched, but the Cowboy was able to prevail, 7-6(4). The junior dominated the second set, 6-1, to get OSU on the board for the first time of the day.Â
ÂOklahoma State didn't let up there, controlling the next two courts to get back into the match. Freshman Fran Pini didn't falter after being pushed up a court as he wasted no time defeating Franco Ribero, 6-4, 6-1, to notch another point for Oklahoma State, 3-2.Â
ÂJoseph Chen made a crucial comeback in his contest with Tech's Piotr Pawlak. A quick opening set went to the Red Raider, 6-2. Chen rebounded quickly and rolled through the next pair of sets, 6-3, 6-2, to knot the match at 3-3.Â
ÂWith the outcome hanging in the balance, Alex Garcia went the distance against Reed Collier on court two. Garcia easily routed Collier in the opening set, 6-2. The second set consisted of a back-and-forth battle, but the Red Raider was able to prevail in a tiebreaker 7-6(4). The third set proved to be more of the same between the two players as they went point for point, but Collier escaped in the tiebreaker, 7-6(4) to give Texas Tech the match.Â
ÂThe Cowboys are back home on Thursday as they play host to TCU at the Greenwood Tennis Center.Â
