STILLWATER – The NCAA released the seedings and brackets Wednesday for the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships, scheduled for March 17-19 at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
Oklahoma State will send eight Cowboys to compete in the event, led by Daton Fix who is the highest seeded Cowboy as the second seed in the 133-pound bracket.
A two-time NCAA finalist, Fix has entered both of his NCAA Championships as the top seed in his bracket and advanced to the championship match, but came up short in overtime twice. This season, Fix boasts a 21-0 record with 15 bonus-point wins in his first full season with OSU since 2019. In his last outing, he became the 36th three-time conference champion in program history, going 4-0 at the Big 12 tournament with two tech falls and a major decision before a 6-2 victory in the finals.
Three other Cowboys earned top-10 seeds in their respective brackets, including Big 12 champions Kaden Gfeller (149) and Dustin Plott (174), along with 125-pounder Trevor Mastrogiovanni.
Gfeller, a two-time Big 12 champion, will enter his second NCAA Championships as the No. 9 seed at 149 pounds. In 2019, Gfeller was the seventh seed, but lost back-to-back bouts to exit the tournament. At 18-2 this season, Gfeller has been a consistent force in the Cowboy lineup.
Fresh off an exciting Big 12 championship win, Dustin Plott claimed the No. 6 seed at 174 pounds. Plott is making his second appearance at the NCAA tournament, where he went 1-2 as the No. 18 seed as a true freshman. This season, Plott is 17-3 with nine wins over ranked opponents as he looks to make a run to the podium for the first time.
Trevor Mastrogiovanni is the fourth Cowboy to earn a top-10 seed. The sophomore is 18-3 on the year and coming off a third-place finish at the Big 12 tournament. A two-time NCAA qualifier, Mastrogiovanni earned the seventh seed in the 125-pound bracket, marking the highest seed of his young career.
Dakota Geer (16) and Luke Surber (19) landed inside the top-20 of their brackets. Geer will return to the event for a fourth time, as he strives to become the 15th four-time All-American in program history after placing seventh in 2019 and fifth in 2021, to go with All-America recognition from the NWCA when the event was cancelled in 2020. Making his first tournament appearance, Surber enters the tournament with a 13-8 record on the season. In the Big 12 Championships, where he started as the seven seed in the heavyweight bracket, Surber made a run to the championship match and knocked off three wrestlers he lost to earlier in the season.
Carter Young earned an automatic bid to his first NCAA Championships with a seventh-place finish at the conference tournament. Young received the No. 25 seed at 141 pounds after posting a 12-7 record this season. Wyatt Sheets aims to become a three-time All-American, but will have a long road to the podium from the No. 31 seed at 157 pounds. The senior has been in a similar position before as he became the lowest seed to ever finish as an All-American coming from the No. 33 seed to finish eighth a year ago.
