TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team finished the third of four sessions at the 2022 Big 12 Wrestling Championships Sunday afternoon with a trio of Cowboys winning placement matches to close their tournament runs.
Â
Trevor Mastrogiovanni (125 pounds), Dakota Geer (184 pounds) and Carter Young (141 pounds) finished third, fifth and seventh, respectively, to bring the Cowboys' team total up to 96.5 points, enough for fourth place in the standings. With Missouri leading the field at 127.5 team points, OSU's bid for a 10th-consecutive conference tournament championship fell out of reach as the Tigers clinched the team title.
Â
With the team trophy out of reach, OSU's school-record streak of nine consecutive conference tournament titles comes to end. In addition to school record, the run was also the longest streak in Big 12 wrestling history. Including the 2012 and 2013 regular season titles that the Cowboys won in the only years they were awarded, OSU had won a conference championship in 12 straight seasons.
Â
Mastrogiovanni won a pair of thrilling bouts to claim his third-place finish. He first earned a 5-3 sudden victory decision over second-seeded Taylor LaMont Utah Valley in the consolation semifinals and then scored a takedown and nearfall in the final five seconds against Oklahoma's Joey Prata in the third-place match to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 win. It marked the highest Big 12 finish of Mastrogiovanni's career.
Â
Although Geer dropped his consolation semifinal to start his day, he responded with an impressive rally in his fifth-place matchup with Deanthony Parker Jr. of North Dakota State. After falling behind 8-0 in the first period, Geer stormed back with three takedowns and a four-point nearfall to win a 13-10 decision. It marked the third-straight season Geer has placed in the top five at the conference tournament.
Â
Young's seventh-place matchup with Utah Valley's Ty Smith was his only bout of the day. He came away with a 7-4 decision to become one of just two true freshmen to place in the top eight at the event.
Â
OSU's competition at the Big 12 Championships concludes tonight with four wrestlers competing in the finals, which ties Missouri for the most in the tournament. With a possible 24 points remaining, the Cowboys can still finish as high as second place as a team. The begins at 7 p.m. at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
Â
The Cowboy finalists include Daton Fix at 133 pounds, Kaden Gfeller at 149 pounds, Dustin Plott at 174 pounds and Luke Surber at heavyweight. Fix will aim for his third conference title, while Gfeller tries for his second and Plott and Surber try for their first.
