Cowboys Claim Multiple U20 World Team Spots and U23 National Championships

Geneva, Ohio - Oklahoma State Wrestling claimed four titles at this weekend's U20 World Team Trials and U23 National Championships at the SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, as Dreshaun Ross, Landon Robideau, Troy Spratley and Bennett Berge, each emerged on top from their brackets.

U20 World Team Trials
Starting with Friday's U20 World Team Trials action, Dreshaun Ross and Landon Robideau each staked their claims as U20 World Team members with dominant performances.

Ross, an incoming freshman, wrestled at the 125kg weight class and showed resilience throughout the tournament. He had to work his way to the best-of-three championship series with U.S. Open Champion Coby Merril. To get there, he defeated Dean Bechtold with a 53-second pin, then took down Michael Mocco (TF, 11-0). Ross dropped the first match in the championship to Merril, but came back with two straight decisions over the future Iowa State Cyclone to win the series and secure his spot in August's U20 World Championships.

NCAA champion Robideau, with the help of his U.S. Open Championship in April, already was set in the best-of-three series and awaited Melvin Miller. Robideau proved too much for Miller, winning each of his two matches in shutout fashion to join Ross in Slovakia from August 16-23.

Ronnie Ramirez, Dee Lockett and Kody Routledge all had successful showings, each taking multiple victories. Ramirez, as the 57kg 14-seed, took his talents all the way to the championship match, but fell in one of the tighter bouts this weekend in a 3-2 decisions to top-seeded Grey Burnett. Lockett advanced to the best-of-three series, getting past Routledge in the first-place match at 74kg, but couldn't make it past Jayden James, dropping the best-of-three in two matches.

U23 National Championships
At the U23 stage, veteran Troy Spratley and incoming South Dakota State transfer Bennett Berge each won seven in a row to bring U23 national championships back to Stillwater.

Spratley, already holding an impressive resume at the 57kg class, cruised through the field in Geneva. All seven of his matches were won without giving up a point and six of the seven were tech falls. Spratley faced off against a familiar conference foe in Missouri's Mack Mauger in the best-of-three championship bout and made quick work of his competition, taking two straight tech falls, both in four minutes or less, to earn the title.

All-American Berge, in one of his first competitions as a Cowboy, had similar success to Spratley en route to his title. Following four-straight techs and a decisive victory over Ian Bush in the semifinals, Berge set up a championship match with his former teammate at SDSU Borck Fettig. Like Spratley, Berge claimed two straight over the Jackrabbit and staked his claim as U23 national champion at 86kg.

Fellow Cowboys Casey Swiderski (74kg) and Cutter Sheets (70kg) also had successful stints at SPIRE Academy, taking fifth and sixth place, respectively. Nine of the 10 Cowboys at the U23's took three or more wins this weekend, including Kolter Burton with an impressive six wins at 70kg.
