OSU Wrestling in First Place After Session I of Big 12 Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up the first session of the 2022 Big 12 Wrestling Championships in first place Saturday morning, advancing six wrestlers to Saturday night's semifinal round. The Cowboys' 57 team points are two more than second-place Northern Iowa and three more than third-place Iowa State.
OSU's semifinalists include Trevor Mastrogiovanni at 125 pounds, Daton Fix at 133, Kaden Gfeller at 149, Dustin Plott at 174, Dakota Geer at 184 and Luke Surber at heavyweight. Geer received a preliminary round bye and advanced with one win in the session, while the other five each went 2-0 in Session I to move on to the semifinals.
The Cowboys began the day with seven of their 10 wrestlers in the preliminary round, going 5-2 with four bonus-point wins. The highlight of the round came from Gfeller at 149 pounds when he pinned South Dakota State's Daniel Kimball in 4:12.
Fix won his preliminary round bout over Northern Colorado's Dyson Kunz with a 18-3 technical fall in 6:17, while Plott and Surber won major decisions and Mastrogiovanni won via a 7-1 decision.
OSU's record in the quarterfinal was even better, as all five Cowboys who won in the preliminary won again, and the team finished with 6-2 record in the round.
Fix recorded his second technical fall of the session in 3:46 over Wyoming's eight-seeded Job Greenwood, while Gfeller and Plott also added their second bonus-point wins of the session with major decisions and Mastrogiovanni and Geer advanced via decisions.
Surber provided the highlight of the round when he upset second-seeded Zach Elam of Missouri. Surber scored a takedown with 54 seconds remaining in the third period and rode out the end of regulation to force a sudden victory with score tied at 4-4. He kept on the pressure and scored the winning takedown in the first period of sudden victory to win a 6-4 decision, advance to the semifinal round and avenge a loss to Elam earlier this season.
Four other Cowboys fell in their first bouts of the event and moved to the consolation bracket, including Carter Young at 141 pounds, Wyatt Sheets at 157, Travis Wittlake at 165 and Gavin Stika at 197.
As a team, the Cowboys finished the session with an 11-4 record in individual bouts, including seven bonus-point wins. All 10 wrestlers return to action in the second session, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
