DETROITÂ - Oklahoma State's Daton Fix pinned No. 10 Chris Cannon of Northwestern in the first period of their Friday morning matchup to earn a spot in the semifinals of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Â
The win highlighted the Cowboys' performance at the third session of the tournament and moved Fix to 24-0 on the year with 17 bonus-point wins and six falls. It also secured the third All-America honors and third semifinals appearance of his career.
Â
"I don't really think about what I'm going to do heading into a match," Fix said. "It was just there so I took it. I go out there looking to score points and I know how to wrestle in any of those positions."
Â
The junior out of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, made quick work of his opponent in the 133-pound quarterfinal as he took him down just over a minute into the match and turned him to his back for the fall in 1:53 to pick up his second first-period fall of the season. The win now pits him against No. 3 Michael McGee of Arizona State in Friday night's semifinal round.
Â
Cowboy sophomore Dustin Plott also reached the quarterfinal round, but he was unable to get past No. 3-seeded Logan Massa of Michigan as he dropped an 8-3 decision to the two-time All-American in the 174-pound bracket. He'll face No. 7 Ethan Smith of Ohio State in Friday night's fourth consolation round, with the winner securing All-America honors.
Â
He'll be joined in the fourth consolation round by OSU 149-pounder Kaden Gfeller, who used a first-period fall over No. 23 Jaden Abas of Stanford and a 2-1 decision over No. 16 Willie McDougald of Oklahoma in his second and third round consolation matchups to advance. He'll need to upset Wisconsin's third-seeded Austin Gomez Friday night to become an All-American.
Â
Dakota Geer nearly made it to the fourth consolation round with them, but after he secured a 5-3 win in sudden victory against No. 18 Abe Assad of Iowa in the second consolation round at 184 pounds, he came up just short in a frenzied, back-and-forth match with No. 8 Marcus Coleman of Iowa State, losing 18-13 in his final collegiate match.
Â
Trevor Mastrogiovanni (125 pounds), Wyatt Sheets (157 pounds) and Luke Surber (heavyweight) also bowed out of the tournament in session three, but it is worth noting that both of Sheets' losses in the event were hard-fought decisions against the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the bracket.
Â
As a team, the Cowboys moved up to No. 12 in the standings after starting the session in 15th place, and they now have 23.5 total points with half of the six sessions remaining.
Â
The fourth session of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships will begin at 7 p.m. CT Friday night. Fans can watch the action live on ESPN and can stream every match live ESPN.com or through the ESPN app. Cowboy fans can also follow along on Twitter through @CowboyWrestling.
