Cowboys Drop Close Dual at No. 12 Missouri, 21-20
February 06, 2022 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team got out to an early lead in its dual against No. 12 Missouri, but couldn't hold on as the Tigers rallied for a 21-20 victory and claimed their first win in the series since 2018.
OSU won the first three bouts of the match, which included a fall from Kaden Gfeller to put the Cowboys up 9-0 after Carter Young opened the dual with a 7-4 decision. Facing No. 23 Josh Edmond, Gfeller led 3-2 after the opening period where he scored a takedown, was reversed, and then escaped from Edmond. Gfeller added another takedown in the second before turning Edmond and pinning him with nine seconds left to go in the period.
Wyatt Sheets picked up his second win of the weekend with a 2-1 decision over No. 21 Jarrett Jacques. Leading 1-0 after the second period, Sheets rode Jacques the entire third period, trading a stalling point for the riding time point to secure the victory.
The Tigers won five of the next six matches to take the lead as Dakota Geer's 2-0 decision over No. 24 Jeremiah Kent at 184 pounds was the only victory for the Cowboys during that span. Travis Wittlake, Dustin Plott and Gavin Stika each dropped decisions, while Luke Surber and Alexander Yokubaitis were pinned in back-to-back matches. Yokubaitis filled in for eighth-ranked Trevor Mastrogiovanni who was unavailable at 125 pounds, which left OSU without two starters as A.J. Ferrari remains out due to injury.
Trailing by six in the team score, No. 2 Daton Fix took the mat needing a pin to tie the dual and take it to criteria to decide the winner. Fix totaled nine takedowns in his bout resulting in a 22-5 technical fall, but leaving the Cowboys a point short.
Oklahoma State will have another tough test next weekend in Arlington, Texas, in Bout at the Ballpark. OSU will face No. 2 Iowa at Globe Life Field while the U.S. men's national team will be wrestling international competition simultaneously beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
