November 02, 2022 | Cowgirl Golf
PATTAYA, Thailand ---- Oklahoma State women's golfers Rina Tatematsu and Maddison Hinson-Tolchard are set to compete Thursday at the Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship in Pattaya, Thailand at Waterside Course.
Â
The Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship debuted in 2018, and has quickly risen to be one of the top amateur tournaments in the world. This year's field includes the sport's best young players from all around the globe, as 86 players representing 21 countries traveled to Thailand to compete in the prestigious tournament.
Â
The field will play two rounds of 18-hole stroke play, with the leading 50 players progressing past the 36-hole cut and playing in the final two rounds, running from Thursday through Sunday in all.
Â
With a win, the champion will earn starts in two major championships in 2023, the AIG Women's Open and Amundi Evian Championship, as well as invitations to play in the Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship and Hana Financial Group Championship.
Â
The trip will be a homecoming for Rina Tatematsu, who was born in Bangkok, Thailand and will be representing her home country throughout the weekend.
Â
"I'm super proud to be representing Thailand," Tatematsu said at her press conference Tuesday prior to the tournament. "I just want to enjoy every second of it and have a lot of fun."
Â
Tatematsu has been playing well on the college level as of late, recording a T11 finish at the Jim West Challenge in October, her highest of the 2022 fall schedule.
Â
She is no stranger to the international level, however, appearing at both the Augusta National Women's Amateur and Honda LPGA Thailand within the last year. Additionally, this will be Tatematsu's third visit to the Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship in her career.
Â
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard will represent her home country of Australia this weekend after recently climbing up to 89th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, her highest placement to date.
Â
At Oklahoma State, she has seen an abundance of success throughout her three years in school, helping lead the Cowgirls to a National Runner-Up finish in 2021 and then earning 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year honors as a sophomore.
Â
More recently, Hinson-Tolchard has continued her successful ways with a pair of top-10 finishes in the Cowgirls' first four events of the 2022-23 campaign. Last month, she fired a career-low 204 at the Illini Women's Invitational, winding up in 3rd place.
Â
Like Tatematsu, Hinson-Tolchard has plenty of experience internationally. The Australia native claimed the title at the 2021 Women's Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship, and recently made a splash at the U.S. Women's Amateur at Chambers Bay in August.
Â
Hinson-Tolchard will tee off with the first group of the weekend Thursday at 7:00 a.m. ICT, with Tatematsu following suit shortly after at 7:05 a.m. ICT.
Â
Locally, the two will begin play Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. CT and 7:05 p.m. CT, respectively.
