Cowgirl Golfer Stark Earns Academic All-America Honors
August 06, 2021 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's golf All-American Maja Stark capped off an impressive sophomore campaign with a selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's At-Large third team.
The Abbekas, Sweden native carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in pre-psychology and was named a first-team All-American by the Women's Golf Coaches Association after leading the Cowgirls to the NCAA Championship final match. Stark was the Big 12 Golfer of the Year and finished four in the voting for the ANNIKA Award, the Heisman Trophy of women's golf.
No player in program history ever recorded more birdies (139, most in the nation) or rounds of par or better (22) than Stark, who also set the Cowgirl golf record for the lowest stroke average in school history at 70.48. She wrapped up her sophomore season ranked No. 4 nationally by GolfStat with a 49-2 record in head-to-head competition against top-100 players in the country.
Stark then took on the professionals at the 2021 U.S. Women's Open and tied for 16th. It was her second straight top-20 finish at the event after a T13 finish in 2020.
Stark is the fourth Cowgirl golfer to be named Academic All-American, joining Emma Zackrisson (2nd team in 2001-02), Karin Sjodin (3rd team in 2004-05) and Karin Kinnerud (2nd team in 2008-09).
She's the sixth OSU student-athlete to earn Academic All-America status this year, joining Logan Carter (2nd team football), Camy Huddleston (2nd team soccer), Hannah Webb (1st team soccer), Carrie Eberle (1st team softball) and Hayley Busby (2nd team softball). It also marks the fifth-consecutive year that OSU has had at least four student-athletes named Academic All-American (six in 2017, nine in 2018, five in 2019, four in 2020, six in 2021).
In all, OSU has had 30 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans thus far over the past five seasons with track and field teams still to be announced.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large squads recognize the accomplishments of all Division I student-athletes across a variety of winter and spring sports, including hockey, swimming, tennis, fencing, bowling, lacrosse, golf, gymnastic and many others. The quantity of the student-athletes in the category makes it among the most difficult academic achievements in the country.
