Pokes Total Four School Record Performances in Sooner Invite Finale
April 17, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
NORMAN, Okla. – In the second and final day from the Sooner Invitational, Oklahoma State's team performance was headlined by a total of four school-record-breaking performances.
In just her fourth outdoor competition as a Cowgirl, Kelsey Kehl cemented her name in school history with the best performance by an Oklahoma State woman ever in the javelin throw.
The Washington State-transfer previously held the third-ranked mark in school history – a 45.96m mark she recorded at the TCU Invite – but improved upon that performance to take No. 1. Kehl's third attempt was the one to secure her the event win and OSU record: a 47.94m mark. The throw ranks third in the Big 12 thus far in the 2021 outdoor season.
"It feels really good to have all efforts come to fruition," Kehl said. "I know there's more that I can build off of today's performance and that excites me for what comes next. It's been so long since I've been able to throw, so to get back into this season has been great. Ever since I committed to Oklahoma State, I've had my eyes on the record board and knew it was something attainable for me. It's been a good motivator for this spring season."
Closing out the heptathlon after a strong showing in day one competition, Bailey Golden tied up the Cowgirl record and first multis event win of her career with an individual win and career best in the long jump followed immediately by a runner-up individual finish in the javelin throw.
Golden's final point total, 5,481, tops the Cowgirls' previous record – Tihana Sarac's 5,057-point finish at the 2008 Mt. SAC Relays – by 424 points. Her record performance ranks fourth in the Big 12 this season and 14th in the NCAA.
"I haven't been able to compete outdoors my whole time here at OSU, so to coming out at my first outdoor meet and beating that record is a good marker for the future. Putting all of it together felt really good. I'm looking forward to learning from what we did this weekend. Of course, we'll be happy with how we did, but we know there's plenty to be worked on.
In the midst of the second day of the men's decathlon, Max Braht recorded back-to-back individual event wins in the pole vault and the javelin throw. Historically a second-day performer, Braht took full advantage of one of his stronger events in the javelin to rewrite Cowboy track and field history.
The freshman's first-attempt mark of 58.61m crushed OSU's previous record and placed him squarely in first for the event, more than 10 meters ahead of the second-place finisher.
"It's nice to be able to rely on javelin and some of those day two events to be some of my higher scores," Braht said. "Coming in of course I wanted to throw well, but I was just able to get everything to click and launch one as far as I did."
Rounding out an impressive group of record-breaking performances was William Edmonds. Oklahoma State's all-time indoor heptathlon performer added the Cowboys' outdoor decathlon record to his remarkable collegiate resume with a final point total of 6,830 points. Edmonds takes the place of former-record holder Cole Verble, whose 6,221-point finish at the John McDonnell Invitational sat atop the Cowboys' all-time list since 2019.
"It means a lot to get to hold that record," Edmonds said. "Me and the guys and the coaching staff have put in a lot to get here. I think there's a lot of points left out there on the table for all of us. Here in the next few weeks, it should get even better for everyone. We really just wanted to get into it, get into the flow of things and try to have a little fun with it. After some rest, we'll get back to it and do it better later this month."
In the pole vault, Ray secured the first win of her collegiate career; her 3.75m mark earned her the women's pole vault crown. The mark ranks fourth all-time by a Cowgirl.
Ryan Roane and Sydney Ritter returned for day two to represent the Cowgirls in the triple jump and both of the jumps specialists recorded top-10 finishes. Roane's 11.82m jump was enough for the fourth-place finish, with Ritter not far behind in sixth place thanks to a career best 11.32m mark.
The Pokes return home to rest, recover and readjust for a busy week ahead. While OSU's distance unit heads to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays, the Pokes will also compete at the John Jacobs Invitational at Oklahoma and the John McDonnell Invitational at Arkansas.
