THE BASICS
The Oklahoma State women's cross country team will open up the spring portion of the cross country season on the road at the FSU Winter Classic in Tallahassee, Florida. Unaccompanied by the NCAA Championship-qualified Cowboys, the Cowgirls will fly solo to compete in the FSU Winter Classic, with sights set on the NCAA Cross Country Championship in March on their home course in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
After sorting out a reliable top-seven during the 2020 season, finding elite talent in sophomores Taylor Roe and Gabby Hentemann and adding back 2019 All-Americans Molly Born and Taylor Somers coming back off of injuries, the Cowgirls are in peak form heading into the second half of this segmented cross country season.
STEPPING INTO SPRING
After having the opportunity to compete in a cross country season that nearly didn't happen, Oklahoma State's cross country teams are approaching the back half of the season with a renewed fervor after a rare few extra months to train for the NCAA National Championship.
The 2020 Big 12 champion-Cowboys qualified for the season finale after their tie-breaker victory over Iowa State to win the conference race in October. Filling out the top-five for the Cowboys will be All-Big 12 runners Isai Rodriguez, Victor Shitsama, Ryan Schoppe, Alex Maier and Ryan Smeeton. Dave Smith, OSU director of cross country and track & field, has plenty of talent to choose from to round out the men's unit that will represent Oklahoma State in the NCAA Championship.
For the Cowgirls, it's Taylor Roe leading the way. The sophomore paced the Cowgirls in every race during the fall and qualified as an individual thanks to her runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championship. With Roe's spot in the championship secure, it will be up to the Cowgirls competing Friday to earn Oklahoma State a spot in the women's race and qualify the Cowgirls for the seventh time in the last 11 years.
