Norman, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 17 Oklahoma, 31-3, in Norman at the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday night.
"Overall, I thought we wrestled well," head coach John Smith said. "We won the tight matches and won some matches we have struggled with in the past. I think the difference in the match was the takedown ratio we had compared to them."
The Cowboys took nine of 10 matches from the Sooners, including ranked wins at 157, 165, 184, 197, 125 and 133.
Kaden Gfeller set the tone for the dual in the first match at 149 pounds. Gfeller was in control of Oklahoma's Dom Demas, who is a former All-American at 141 pounds for the Sooners. Tied at 2 going into the third period, Gfeller outscore Demas 7-1 in the final period to secure a 9-3 decision.
"I didn't know what to expect," Gfeller said. "I just wanted to wrestle my match and wrestle hard and push the pace on him to see if he could go. I took it personal that they flipped and wanted to start at 149 because they thought those one-hour weigh-ins would give me trouble. I was excited about that match."
Following Gfeller, Wyatt Sheets won a sudden victory decision over No. 15 Justin Thomas at 157 pounds to put the Cowboys up 6-0 in the team score. Sheets improves to 3-1 on the season after defeating ranked opponents in back-to-back matches against Drexel and OU. Travis Wittlake (165) was solid in his match against No. 29 Joe Grello as he won with an 8-4 decision.
Between 174-197, each of the Cowboys moved to 4-0 on the season as they helped the Cowboys build up a 19-0 lead through six matches. Dustin Plott continued his strong start to the season as he picked up a 10-2 major decision over Anthony Mantanona at 174. Dakota Geer (184) defeated No. 18 Darrien Roberts, 8-2, while top-ranked AJ Ferrari defeated No. 11 Jake Woodley for the fourth time in his career by a score of 6-3.
The Sooners got on the board when Josh Heindselman took down Luke Surber in sudden victory.
After that, it was much of the same story for Oklahoma State as No. 12 Trevor Mastrogiovanni remained undefeated with a 6-4 decision against No. 21 Joey Prata. Mastrogiovanni used a late takedown in the third period to seal the victory after being tied 4-4 with under a minute to go in the match.
At 133 pounds, Daton Fix collected his second fall and third bonus-point win of the season against No. 19 Tony Madrigal. Up big in the third period, Fix had a technical fall secured but ended up pinning Madrigal in 6:20. True freshman Carter Young wrapped up the night winning his first Bedlam match of his career. The Stillwater native defeated OU's Jacob Butler 9-4.
Oklahoma State will head for a three-match road trip in the mountains next weekend. The Cowboys will face both Air Force and Wyoming on Friday, with the dual against Air Force being at 1 p.m. before driving to Laramie to take on Wyoming at 8:30 p.m. A dual against Utah Valley will conclude the fall slate for OSU on Monday, December 20 at 8 p.m.
