Â
Cowboys in the PollsÂ
Oklahoma State's roster features 10 wrestlers ranked in various polls this week, with six holding spots inside the top-10. Sophomore 197-pounder AJ Ferrari is the consensus No. 1 wrestler at his weight and is the highest ranked Cowboy, after winning his first individual title at the NCAA Championships in March. Following Ferrari, Daton Fix appears at No. 2 at 133 pounds as the reigning Big 12 champion and national finalist. Also making appearances in the top 10 of their respective weight classes are All-Americans Travis Wittlake and Dakota Geer. Wittlake is as high as No. 5 at 165 pounds in the Intermat rankings, while Geer is ranked sixth at 184 pounds by FloWrestling. 125-pounder Trevor Mastrogiovanni cracked the top-10 of the FloWrestling poll for the first time in his earlier this season following an upset over No. 5 Patrick McKee. He holds the No. 7 spot in FloWrestling's poll. A 3-0 start to the season with three wins over ranked opponents has Dustin Plott (174) into the top-10 of the WIN Magazine poll where he is tabbed No. 9 in his weight class. Wyatt Sheets (157) is ranked as high as No. 12 by various polls, while Kaden Gfeller (149) is as high as No. 17 in FloWrestling's rankings. At 141 pounds, true freshman Carter Young is ranked No. 28 by. Intermat after picking up the first win of his career against Drexel, while Luke Surber lands at No. 30 in Intermat's heavyweight poll.
Â
Match to WatchÂ
The highest-ranked matchup of the dual will come at 197 pounds where No. 1 AJ Ferrari takes on No. 11 Jake Woodley. Ferrari, the reigning national champion at 197 pounds as a true freshman, has picked up where he left off to begin the 2021-22 season with three bonus-point wins in as many matches. Woodley, who placed sixth at the NCAA Championships last season, has been ranked as high as No. 6 this season and most recently had a fourth-place finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational. The 197-pounders met three times last year: twice in duals and once at the Big 12 Championship. Ferrari won all three matches by decisions with the biggest win coming by a score of 8-4 in the last meeting. They were one match away from wrestling for a fourth time with a national championship on the line as both wrestlers made the NCAA semifinals, but Woodley dropped his bout to Nino Bonaccorsi (PITT).
Â
Dustin His CompetitionÂ
Cowboy 174-pounder Dustin Plott has gotten off to an impressive start in his sophomore season. So far, he has faced a ranked opponent in each of OSU's three duals and defeated each of them. He beat No. 31 Tyler Eischens of Stanford, 7-6, No. 23 Jared Krattiger (MINN), 6-1, and No. 12 Mickey O'Malley (DREX), 6-3. His upset over O'Malley his last time out marked the highest-ranked win of his young career. Beginning the season ranked No. 16 by Intermat, Plott has moved up to No. 9 thus far.
