Including this season, OSU has appeared in the top 15 of the AP poll in 12 of the past 14 seasons. It has had a top 10 ranking in the AP poll at some point in 10 of those 14 years. Big Game in Boone Pickens Stadium
Saturday's game will mark just the fourth time that a matchup between teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll has been played in Stillwater, adding to a list that includes No. 5 OSU vs. No. 9 Nebraska in 1985, No. 4 OSU vs. No. 10 Baylor in 2015 and No. 9 OSU vs. No. 5 Oklahoma in 2015. It is also just the third time in the Bedlam series that the game has included two AP top-10 teams and is the 12th time in OSU history that the Cowboys have played in a game with both teams ranked in the AP top 10. Here's a list of OSU's wins in games between AP top 10 teams:
Â
Â
The Series
Saturday's game is part of the all-sports Phillips 66 Bedlam Series between Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. The Phillips 66 Bedlam Series is calculated by straight wins and losses in head-to-head competition. In sports where there is no head-to-head matchup, the Big 12 Championship final standings are used. Oklahoma State has won the overall Phillips 66 Bedlam Series in seven of the past eight years, and in 2020-21 OSU won by the widest margin in series history, 23-12. OSU leads the 2021-22 series, 7-2. A look at this year's results to date:
Â
Â
Saturday's game marks the 116th meeting between Oklahoma State and Oklahoma, with the series dating to 1904. The 2021 season also marks the 112th consecutive year the teams have met. Oklahoma owns an 89-19-7 advantage in the all-time series and a 40-7-5 lead in Stillwater.
Â
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 10-1 on the year and has already secured its spot in the Big 12 Championship Game with one game remaining in the regular season. With a win over Oklahoma and a Baylor win over Texas Tech, the Cowboys will play Baylor in the title game. Any other result would produce a Bedlam rematch in Arlington with the Big 12 title at stake. The Pokes have improved each week as the year has gone and are now a significant part of the conversation when it comes to the reaching the College Football Playoff. They have beaten their past four opponents by a combined score of 165-23. OSU's 35.5-point average margin of victory over the past four weeks ranks No. 1 in college football - 1.25 better than second-place Georgia, 6.0 better than fourth-place Notre Dame, 11.75 better than 10th-place Ohio State, 12.5 better than 11th-place Alabama, 16.0 better than 14th-place Cincinnati, 19.75-better than 23rd place Michigan and 27.17 better than 40th-place Oklahoma during that timeframe. OSU's 5.75 points allowed per game is also No. 1 in the FBS during that time and 3.5 points per game better than second-place Georgia in the stretch. OSU has a 5-1 mark against FPI top-50 opponents (with a 12.2 points-per-game margin) and three wins vs. teams ranked at game time. Its lone loss came on the road by three points to a preseason AP top-10 team. Its ESPN Strength of Record is No. 6 nationally and FiveThirtyEight's ELO ranking lists OSU as the No. 4 team in the FBS. Following OSU's win over Texas Tech, FiveThirtyEight gives OSU a 98 percent chance to reach the CFP if the Cowboys win out. The Oklahoma State defense has performed at a historic level all season. OSU now leads the nation in sacks, tackles for loss and third down defense, and is also among the FBS top four in scoring defense (No. 2), total defense (No. 3), rushing defense (No. 4), first downs defense (No. 4) and more. Although the defense has garnered most of the headlines, the Cowboy offense has taken its game to the next level of late. Over the past four weeks, the Cowboys have averaged more than 41.25 points (No. 14 in the FBS during that timeframe) and more than 482.25 yards of offense per game. When it comes to play in conference games only, Oklahoma State ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 in total offense, No. 1 in rushing offense and No. 3 in scoring offense. In short, OSU is peaking on both sides of the ball.
