Roe Finishes Third, Cowgirls Place Fifth in Loaded Nuttycombe Field
October 15, 2021 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
MADISON, Wis. – Oklahoma State women's cross country competed in the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The Cowgirls placed fifth overall in what turned out to be a loaded field in Wisconsin, with 16 Top-25 teams competing in the event.
Taylor Roe led the championship race after 4K and finished the race third, posting a time of 20:01.1, which is a personal-best and is the third-fastest 6K time in school history, behind Natalja Piliusina and Sinclaire Johnson.
"I think (Taylor) did a really good job," Coach Dave Smith said. "I think she was aggressive when she needed to be… There was a point there at about 5K where she put in a move that looked like she was going to break the race open… But I think she had second thoughts and I think that gave the people behind her some hope and helped a couple girls out-kick her."
Molly Born held her own in the top 20, also finishing with a personal-best time of 20:24.4 in 17th. Kelsey Ramirez (44th), Stephanie Moss (68th) and Sivan Auerbach (75th) rounded out the scoring finishers for the Cowgirls, posting times of 20:05.5, 21:06.1 and 21:09.3, respectively. Moss and Auerbach's times were each personal bests in the 6K.
Clarissa Morales, Heidi Demeo and Maddie Salek finished off the race for the Cowgirls, with times of 21:15.2, 21:41.2 and 22:23.2, respectively.
Rilee Rigdon competed in the "B" race for the Cowgirls, placing fourth in the race with a time of 21:09, which is over one minute faster than her previous personal-best time.
Overall, the Cowgirls defeated several Top-25 teams on the day and only finished behind the top three and sixth-ranked teams in the country, securing several points that will help them qualify for the NCAA Championships in November.
"I would put us in the top five or six nationally right now," Smith said. "I think we're a pretty good team, I think when we add Gabby Hentemann back in there… We get a little bit better. Conference is going to be a battle like it always is, but I like where we are."
Looking ahead, the Cowgirls and Cowboys return to Stillwater for the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 29 at The Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.
