OSU Track and Field Leads Big 12 in Academic Honorees
May 06, 2020 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – After performing at a high level in the classroom this year, the Oklahoma State track and field program is starting to see the awards and accolades roll in. Data released today by the Big 12 conference office shows both the Cowboys (23 representatives) and the Cowgirls (33 representatives) led the league in total Academic All-Big 12 selections in 2020.
Of OSU's 56 Academic All-Big 12 honorees, 12 were nominated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. For perspective, there were 49 student-athletes in the conference who were nominated with a 4.0 GPA, meaning that nearly 25 percent of all perfect GPAs in the Big 12 this year came from Oklahoma State.
"Seeing our people earn awards like this is a source of pride for us," coach Dave Smith said. "There's the added satisfaction of leading the Big 12 this year, but ultimately, this is about our people putting in the work to be successful."
On the men's side, 16 of OSU's 23 honorees were first-team selections. Included in that batch were four All-Americans – Ashenafi Hatte, Blake Scott, Isai Rodriguez and Ryan Smeeton. On the women's side, 32 of OSU's 33 honorees were first-team selections. Included in that group were three All-Americans – Ariane Ballner, Molly Born and Taylor Somers.
To earn a first-team spot, one must maintain a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
