Oklahoma State Rises Five Spots Following A Victorious Weekend In California
March 10, 2020 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team jumps up to No. 16 in the this week's ITA Division I men's rankings released by the ITA on Tuesday. Oklahoma State was sitting at No. 21 going into last weekend's matches, but after defeating the California Golden Bears on the road in a top-30 matchup, the team has jumped five spots.
The Cowboys have started the 2020 season with a 9-3 record, with their trio of losses coming at the hands of top-25 teams. OSU opened the year with three victories in a row over San Diego State, Lamar and Bryant. Its first loss of the season came at the hands of No. 18 Columbia at the ITA Kickoff; Columbia is now ranked No. 14 in the country.
OSU fell to No. 22 Ole Miss in January, and then most recently, had its four-match winning streak snapped by No. 17 Wake Forest. Ole Miss and Wake Forest both sit in the top-15 this week. Oklahoma State has logged five of its wins over San Diego, Northwestern and No. 4 Michigan. The Cowboys bounced back this past weekend with a victory over No. 30 California in La Jolla, Calif.
There are only two teams in the Big 12 with a higher ranking than the Cowboys this week. The Texas Longhorns come in at No. 4 in the country, just one spot lower than they were last week. Texas is 13-3 this season with ranked wins coming over No. 1 Florida, No. 21 Florida State, No. 18 Georgia, No. 16 UCLA, No. 8 Stanford (twice), and No. 43 Tulane. The only other Big 12 team ranked higher than Oklahoma State this week is TCU. The Horned Frogs come in at No. 7 behind an 11-4 start to the year.
Something notable about both No. 7 TCU and No. 4 Texas is that both teams have suffered losses at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines. Oklahoma State swept No. 4 Michigan in Stillwater on Feb. 21, 4-0.
The Cowboys will now turn their attention to this weekend with three matches coming their way. Tulsa comes to the Greenwood Tennis Center on March 13 at 5:00 PM to kick off the weekend, then OSU will face Abilene Christian and UMKC in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
