February 07, 2020 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER -Â The No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowboys faced off against the San Diego Toreros on Friday night in Stillwater, Okla. and picked up a 4-1 victory. This was the first match back in Stillwater since Jan. 17 when the Cowboys opened their home season with back-to-back wins over Lamar and Bryant.
The Cowboys won the doubles point over the Toreros to start the night off. Dominik Kellovsky and freshman Etienne Donnet won the first match of the night on court three over Sacchitt Sharma and Joel Gamerov, 6-2. No. 45 Matej Vocel and Emile Hudd played on court one and picked up a win over August Holmgren and Gui Osorio, 6-4. Brady Draheim and Luke Hammond paired up on court two, but their match against Sacchitt Sharma and David Norfeldt went unfinished with the Cowboys trailing 4-5.Â
OSU lost the first singles match of the night when Nico Borter defeated Luke Hammond on court six, 6-2, 6-2. Oklahoma State's first singles point came from No. 35 Matej Vocel as he defeated August Holmgren, 6-2, 6-2, on court one. No. 110 Dominik Kellovsky defeated No. 39 Gui Osorio, 6-3, 6-1, to put OSU up 3-1. No. 87 Emile Hudd would clinch the match for Oklahoma State on court three with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Sacchitt Sharrma.
"I was really impressed," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "To win at one and two at this level, when you're playing what I consider to be a top-25 team, you have to play well. Of course we're at home, and they're used to playing outside, but still, the level we showed and the way Dominik [Kellovsky] and Matej [Vocel] played, it was a great performance. Both singles and doubles, but especially singles was impressive."
Friday's victory moves the Cowboys to 6-2 on the year, with their only losses coming at the hands of No. 18 Columbia and No. 22 Ole Miss. The Cowboys will now have one day of rest before they turn around to take on Northwestern in Stillwater on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m.Â
