• The Basics
The new era of Oklahoma State basketball has arrived. Led by Associated Press Preseason All-American Cade Cunningham, the Cowboys welcome the nation's No. 4 ranked recruiting class into a locker room of veterans that wrapped up 2019-20 with wins in eight of their last 11 games - all against Big 12 competition. The infusion of talent has OSU fans frothing for the 2020-21 season, which begins with a homecoming for Cunningham and All-Big 12 guard Isaac Likekele, who grew up minutes from UT Arlington's campus. In all, OSU has five players that hail from the DFW Metroplex.
• The Nation's Best Player
Cade Cunningham enters his freshman season with a mile-long list of accolades because of his unique combination of size, vision and play-making ability. The 2020 Naismith High School Player of the Year, Cunningham was the nation's top recruit according to ESPN, 247Sports, Rivals, USA Today and others, and has NBA scouts drooling. The 6-8, 220-pound point guard with a 7-2 wingspan and 10.5-inch hands is one of just 12 players to ever earn a grade of 0.9999 or better in the history of 247Sports (since 2003). That makes him the highest rated point guard in that publication's history.
• All-Big 12 Cowboy
Cowboy Isaac Likekele was named honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference after a standout sophomore season. Likekele, the unquestioned leader of the OSU locker room in 2020-21, recorded his third double-double of the season in the regular-season finale at Texas, and was the Big 12's only player averaging 5.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He led the squad in plus/minus at +115 on the year (+4.1 average per game), and is making a run at the program's record book when it comes to assists and steals. Likekele already ranks 23rd in program history in career assists with 253 dimes, and his 96 career steals is only 20 shy of the program's top-25 list. Boynton praises Likekele's "competitive stamina," which seems to intensify as the game heats up.
• Teammates Once Again
The OSU roster is full of former teammates and competitors who are now reunited in Orange & Black. Cade Cunningham and Isaac Likekele joined forces with USA Basketball to lead their country to the gold medal at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup in Heraklion, Greece. Cunningham, who estimates that he has played with or against half of the OSU roster at some point, was also AAU teammates with fellow freshmen Rondel Walker and Montreal Pena on the Texas Titans, and attended the 2018 NBPA Top 100 camp with Avery Anderson and Kalib Boone. Not to be outdone, Chris Harris and Dee Mitchell were AAU teammates with Houston Hoops.
• Not Just Cade
Oklahoma State's No. 4 ranked signing class doesn't stop with Cade Cunningham. Four-star OKC guard Rondel Walker joins two-time BioSteel All-Canadian Player of the Year Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe, as well as Nebraska's Mr. Basketball, Donovan Williams. Graduate transfer Ferron Flavors Jr. led the WAC in 3-point shooting last season, and Montreal Pena is a three-star forward listed among the top-40 players at his position nationally. Ole Miss transfer Bryce Williams and South Plains CC big man Bernard Kouma joined the Cowboys in July.
• Against The Mavericks
This will mark the 13th meeting between Oklahoma State and UT Arlington. The Pokes are 11-1 in the series with wins in the last five meetings. OSU is 3-1 against the Mavericks in Arlington. In their last meeting on December 19, 2012, the No. 24 Cowboys handled UT Arlington in a 69-44 win in Gallagher-Iba Arena. UTA's lone win in the series came on Dec. 3, 1987 in a 69-58 decision in Arlington.
• DFW Takeover
Approximately 20,000 Oklahoma State alums call DFW home, and so does a large portion of the Cowboy basketball roster. In fact, three Cowboys hail from Arlington: Cade Cunningham (attended Bowie HS prior to Montverde Academy), Isaac Likekele (Timberview HS) and Montreal Pena (Martin HS). Chris Harris Jr. hails from Dallas (South Garland HS) and Avery Anderson III (Northwest HS) went to high school right up the road in Justin, Texas.Â
