April 26, 2019 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State guard Isaac Likekele was invited to participate in the USA Basketball 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup Training Camp, which is being held June 15-24 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Likekele, who started all 32 games for the Cowboys as a freshman in 2018-19, will vie for a spot on the 12-man American roster for the FIBA U19 World Cup, which starts on June 29 in Heraklion, Greece.
"First and foremost, I'd like to thank God, my lord and savior, for putting me in this position and giving me this opportunity. Without his grace and his mercy none of this would be possible," Likekele said. "It's an honor to get the chance to represent my country and play for USA Basketball. I'm excited to compete against some of the best players on the planet while also carrying the torch for Cowboy basketball and its rich international tradition. I can't wait to get started."
Likekele is vying to become the 30th Cowboy to represent his country through USA Basketball. Matt Clark (1979), Marcus Smart (2013) and Jawun Evans (2015) all won gold medals while competing with USA Men's U19 World Championship squads.
In his first season in Stillwater, Likekele joined Smart as the only Cowboy freshmen to ever produce 120-plus assists and 40-plus steals in one season. In fact, Likekele's 126 assists are second only to Smart for the most ever by a Cowboy freshman.
First held in 1979 and known as the FIBA?Junior World Championship, the U19 World Cup features the world's top 19-year-old and younger players, and is held by FIBA every two years.
The USA earned its qualifying spot for the U19 worlds in 2018 by capturing gold at the FIBA?Americas U18 Championship with a 6-0 record.
