Clakley Earns First Big 12 Weekly Honor
April 02, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State softball pitcher Samantha Clakley has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career, the league office announced Tuesday morning.
Tuesday's announcement marks the seventh time that a Cowgirl has been named one of the conference's weekly honorees during Kenny Gajewski's four seasons as head coach. She is the second pitcher to earn the honor under Gajewski, joining Emmie Robertson, who was selected as the league's top arm on April 16, 2018.
Clakley is coming off a dominant week of work in the circle, where she pitched seven shutout innings, allowed only four hits and struck out four batters over two appearances.
During the week, the Carthage, Texas, native continued her recent spell of strong form Wednesday evening with a six-out save during OSU's 9-6 comeback win over Wichita State on the Shockers' home turf. She followed it up by dominating then-No. 9 Texas in OSU's five-inning shutout of the Longhorns, as she allowed only three hits, walked just one batter and struck out three.
Texas' three hits off Clakley were the fewest that a potent Longhorn lineup has mustered in a game this season.
Clakley's five-inning gem marked her first shutout of a top-10 team during her Cowgirl career and it secured OSU's third-straight series victory over the ninth-ranked Longhorns. Her sixth win of the season also helped the Pokes earn what was at the time their fourth consecutive win against UT, marking the longest winning streak by OSU during its rivalry with the Lonestar State staples.
Of the five Big 12 pitchers to not allow an earned run last week, Clakley's seven innings pitched led the group and she was the only one to throw a complete game. The senior's 2.02 earned run average in 55.1 innings pitched is the top mark among Cowgirl pitchers so far this season.
