Cowgirls Come Back to Sweep Iowa State
April 14, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
AMES, Iowa – The No. 14 Oklahoma State softball team clinched its second-straight conference sweep Sunday, as the Cowgirls bested Iowa State, 12-5, at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
OSU (32-11; 10-2 Big 12) trailed 5-4 after two innings, but immediately rallied to post the squad's ninth come-from-behind win so far this season.
"It was a really good day for us and it was good for us to get some adversity when we gave up those five runs," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I didn't think (Samantha) Show was very sharp, but that's the way this game goes. I felt really good about Logan (Simunek). She came in there and slammed that door shut and put up zeroes in every inning. I'm just really excited about the way we swung the bats.
"Rylee (Bayless') weekend was one of the best that I've ever seen and Michaela (Richbourg) continued to grow this weekend."
Rylee Bayless was the anchor of a dynamic offensive outing for OSU, as she went 4-for-4 at the plate Sunday and also drew a walk. Her effort was the 32nd four-hit game in Cowgirl history, and Bayless was the first achieve the feat since Vanessa Shippy did it against South Florida on Feb. 17, 2018.
Sunday's outing marked Bayless' third-straight game with at least three hits, and she has now recorded at least three hits in four of her last nine games.
The versatile star got her impressive display started quickly against the Cyclones Sunday when she chopped the second pitch of the game back up the middle for a leadoff single.
Bayless would score just two batters later when Madi Sue Montgomery hit a two-run shot over the right-field fence. It was Montgomery's second home run in as many days, and the 31st of her career to bring her within four of the OSU record.
Oklahoma State scored four runs in total over the first two innings to seize control of the game, but ISU didn't go down easily, as the Cyclones scored five runs in the home half of the second to take their first lead of the day. The Pokes immediately responded though in the top of the third, when Bayless drove home the go-ahead run with a single down the right-field line.
Bayless would later double to right center and scored on Chyenne Factor's bloop single to left in the top of the sixth.
The Cowgirls continued to tack on runs after re-taking the lead, and four of those came in the game's seventh frame. Bayless was one of the Pokes who scored in the final inning, as she walked and later came around on Michaela Richbourg's RBI single through the right side.
The Kansas City, Missouri, native was one of three Cowgirls to score three times Sunday afternoon, as Madi Sue Montgomery and Chelsea Alexander also thrice-crossed home plate in the series finale.
OSU will look to keep its six-game winning streak going Tuesday night, when the Cowgirls return to Stillwater for their second matchup of the season against Tulsa. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT on Fox Sports Plus.
