STILLWATER – The No. 13 Oklahoma State softball team pushed its winning streak to seven with a 5-0 victory over Tulsa at Cowgirl Stadium Tuesday night.
OSU (33-11; 10-2 Big 12) hit four doubles to help down its in-state foe. It is the eighth time the Cowgirls have reached that mark in a game this season.
"We played well and I thought that we needed that," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought (Samantha) Show pitched well and we got some clutch hitting from (Madi Sue) Montgomery late in the game. I thought our at-bats were really good. I feel like our energy, mentality and the way we went about the whole day was really good. I'm starting to see some things out of this team that I really like."
Samantha Show provided two of the Cowgirls' two-baggers Tuesday night, with the second one driving home OSU's final two runs of the contest. Show leads the Cowgirls with 41 runs batted in this season, and her 11 doubles are one behind Rylee Bayless for the team lead.
The Texas A&M transfer also made her 20th start of the season in the circle Tuesday night, and she was dominant from the start.
Show needed only 73 pitches to toss her seventh complete-game shutout of the season, as she struck out three Golden Hurricane batters and walked none for the first time in a start this year. It was the senior's 13th complete game overall, and in 12 of those outings she has allowed no more than two earned runs.
Madi Sue Montgomery added the third OSU double of the evening in the bottom of the fifth inning when she laced a pitch on the outer half of the plate into left field, scoring freshman Taylor Tuck from second. It was Montgomery's third hit of the night and her second run batted in, bringing her career total to 196 RBI.
She is already the school's career leader in runs batted in, and needs just four more to become the fifth player in Big 12 history with at least 200 career RBI.
While it was a pair of seniors that racked up three of the two-base hits Tuesday, freshman Kiley Naomi was the one who got the doubles party started in the bottom of the second. Naomi, like Montgomery, lined a pitch on the outer half of the plate into the gap in right center field.
It was her ninth double of the season, and her 14th extra-base hit overall.
Naomi's opposite-field shot came on the heels of an impressive effort defensively in the top of the second inning, as she fielded a sharp grounder at short and turned a 6-3 double play to put two outs on the board. It was the 11th double play turned by Naomi this season - the most by a freshman in OSU history.
The Cowgirls will have more than a week away from game action now due to no Big 12 action on the schedule this weekend. Their next contest is a midweek visit to North Texas next Wednesday.
