Cowboys Fall to No. 1 Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team fell to the defending national champion, No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
The Demon Deacons got off to a fast start in doubles, as the tandem of Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos defeated OSU's Artur Dubinski and Matej Vocel, 6-2.
The Pokes responded when sophomore Luke Hammond and freshman Emile Hudd bested Wake Forest's Siddhant Banthia and Melios Efstathiou, 6-3.
The Deacons took the doubles point shortly after though, as Alan Gadjiev and Julian Zlobinsky beat Matej Vocel and Mathieu Scaglia, 6-3, giving the nation's top-ranked team a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Vocel faced the No. 1-ranked singles player in the nation, Petros Chrysochos, and fell 6-3, 6-0. Shortly after, No. 39 Melios Efstathiou defeated Maxim Tybar, 6-2, 6-3, giving Wake Forest a commanding 3-0 lead.
The match was officially clinched when No. 80 Rrezart Cungu bested Scaglia on court four, 6-3, 6-4.
Wake Forest went on to claim two more singles matches, but OSU's Luke Hammond recorded the Cowboys' lone victory of the day, defeating Yuval Solomon (WF) 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 1-0 (10-7), on court five.
Wake Forest's top four singles players all hold top-80 rankings in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings.
Sunday's match was the first time the Cowboys faced a defending national champion since they faced Virginia in the 2016 Sweet Sixteen.
The Pokes are back in action Thursday when they travel to Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern at 6 p.m.
