Postgame Quotes: OSU vs. Kansas State
February 02, 2019 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton
On Kansas State:
"I think (Kansas State) is very good. They played very well today and we didn't, and that was because of them. They were locked in, they rebounded from a disappointing loss, a week ago today (against Texas A&M)."
On how Kansas State pulled away:
"They did what they do. They started to be more aggressive defensively. Part of my goal today was to come in and get a bunch of threes off. We couldn't get clean looks at the rim because they were so aggressive. When they get stops, they do a very good job of getting out and running. They got some easy baskets that put us on our heels. We never recovered for that."
On what Kansas State does well:
"(Defense), no question about it. I'd be shocked if Coach Weber is saying anything different to his team. They were really good, their defense created offense. When they got going offensively, our change of defenses were less effective because they were in such a good rhythm."
On Dean Wade:
"He's Dean Wade for a reason. He's the preseason player of the year in this league -- which I think is the best league in the country -- because of his skill level, ability to shoot the basketball and make other guys better."
On Barry Brown:
"Barry controls the pace of the game on both ends of the floor. He's very disruptive defensively. The stat sheet will show that he only had 18 points, but he was just as good on the other end of the floor today."
On OSU's response to the loss:
"We've got to own what happened. We got our tails kicked. In this league, there's always another opportunity. Fortunately for us, it's a chance to play against a really quality team on the road. We've had some success on the road and hopefully we can draw from those experiences."
Oklahoma State junior Cameron McGriff
On OSU's scoring drought:
"It's just something that we have to take care of internally. It will be easier because we can all find the problems that we've been going through throughout the game. There are only seven or eight of us who are actively playing so we can definitely communicate it and we can make it clear to one another that we need to get certain things done on the court. Sometimes it will take a little longer than the others. That's where we have to be better."
On putting this loss behind:
"We can't hold our heads down because it's a competitive league. Even though it was a bad loss, it's still just one loss. This will hurt just as bad as a two-point loss. We have to move on to the next game."
Oklahoma State junior Thomas Dziagwa
On the loss:
"They are a good ball club. There's a reason why they went to the Elite Eight last year and had everyone returning. They played really well today, just tip the hat to them. We have an off-day tomorrow and back to practice on Monday. The great thing about basketball is that you don't have to wait so long to play again. We learn from this and we prepare for the next one."
On K-State's defense:
"They stuck to their game plan. They knew our plays and they knew when screens were coming and everything. They just played tough and shoutout to them for sticking to their game plan and keep chopping wood like they did, kudos to them."
On K-State adjusting to OSU's defense:
"They were just well-prepared. You can tell that it's a veteran ball club over there. Whoever scouted for them did a great job and as a whole team they did a great job of sticking to their game plan and executing it."
On OSU's scoring drought:
"I felt like we got great shots and it just didn't fall. Against a team like that who slows it down and makes possessions shorter, you can only go so many offensive possessions without making a basket. A team like that, they don't really beat themselves, so when you get good shots, you got to knock them down."
On Dean Wade:
"They are a good ball club. It's not just Dean Wade that you have to worry about. They've got guys coming off the bench who are good. You can't just put the isolated camera on Dean Wade. He didn't miss a shot today, so anytime he had the opportunity to shoot the basketball, he made it. He wasn't even the highest shot taker. He is a tough player to guard, very efficient but you can't just put an isolated camera on him. There are other guys out there that makes Dean Wade look so good and make the other players so good."
Kansas State senior Dean Wade
On playing road games in the Big 12:
"It' always fun playing road games in the Big 12, big arenas and big crowds, so I mean the energy in the building was high you know. After a few shots I felt energy and it definitely had the right energy in there."
On executing the gameplan:
"I think a lot of the credit has to go to the coaching staff and the scouts. They put so much time in and it just gives us a great base of how were going to play. And we went out tonight and we executed. The coaches have done amazing getting us prepared for the game, so I think a lot of it has to do with the coaches and what they do. But then again a lot of it has to do with the players. Our last game was not good against Texas A&M, we just wanted to come back and play with the same energy we played with before and play together. Tonight we came out and played with the right energy at the right level and followed the scouting report executed and I think that just gave us the chance."
On his 9-of-9 shooting performance:
"I honestly had no idea. I didn't really know it until the end when Coach Lowery said something to me about 'Oh you just didn't want to shoot, didn't want to mess up your percentage,' I said what are you talking about. But no I there wasn't really a time in the game where I was like man I haven't missed. There was a time in the where I was like man I feel pretty good, I'm hitting some shots. But I didn't have any idea I didn't miss a shot. I was really focused on trying to get open spots, especially against their zones and just breaking it down."
Kansas State senior Barry Brown
On rebounding from the loss at Texas A&M:
"Practice was hard we just had to get our mental bit right and give our bodies we had a couple days off to do that. When we got back I mean practice was great, energy was high and we were really able to focus in and execute. We beat down into the scouting report, what guys like to do and how the team thrives. So I credit Coach Lowery for putting out that scouting report and for our guys going in and executing."
On slowing down OSU junior Lindy Waters early:
"It was important man, he's a great shooter. He especially gets going in the first half. That was a huge emphasis for us to not let him get those points going in the first half and get a good feel for him. We wanted to run him off the line and keep the ball on the floor. And that's what we did."
Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber
Thoughts on the game:
"I thought we could be a good shooting team. We should be. I think what Dean talked about. The ball movement was really spectacular and what we have hoped all year. Whatever zone, I told them today, they change defense so much to keep you out of rhythm, I said I could give you plays and all that but you gotta play basketball and that's what we did. We got in the gap, we got in the middle, made a lot of extra passes, and a couple probably turned down a couple open shots. There was one in the first half that I thought was great. He had an open one, threw it to somebody, they threw it back to him, and then he hit it, then the next time he had an open one he threw it to somebody and Matt got a layup."
On K-State's big run:
"The 19-0 run probably broke their spirit with a great finish to the half and start of second half. And our defense was also really good, I mean that gives you the chance because we got stops and then to transition we could beat them down the court and get a couple easy ones that really helps. A little disappointing at the end we gave them those extra points but we really defended at a high level that's got to be our constant."
