Cowboy Basketball Posts Perfect 1,000 APR Score
May 23, 2018 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State is the only Power Five conference school in the country with perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in both football and men's basketball, in data released by the NCAA today.
The football and men's basketball programs were among six OSU teams to post perfect 1,000 scores in the 2016-17 APR cycle. Other perfect 2016-17 scores were turned in by the men's golf, men's tennis, women's golf and softball programs.
"Getting a perfect score in the APR means a lot to our program because there is so much hard work that goes into it," OSU football coach Mike Gundy said. "It's a great accomplishment to score 1,000 on the APR with essentially the same group of players that won 10 games for three straight years. Seeing our players succeed both on the field and in the classroom at this kind of level serves to validate the strength of the Cowboy Culture we have in place. We're so grateful for the team over in academics for the time and effort they put into helping our players have success."
From a multiyear perspective (the combined APR of the last four academic years), the men's golf program is Oklahoma State's best with a perfect score of 1,000. Other standout multiyear performers include soccer (992), women's tennis (992), women's track and field (988) women's cross country (988), men's cross country (987) and softball (980).
The APR holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.
Teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships, and every team at Oklahoma State is comfortably above that marker.
An APR score of 980 or higher is considered outstanding and 10 of Oklahoma State's 15 programs exceeded that mark in 2016-17 – baseball, men's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's golf, men's tennis, wrestling, women's golf, softball and soccer . It should be noted that men's track and field narrowly missed with a 2016-17 mark of 978.
Nine of Oklahoma State's 15 sports demonstrated a positive trend by either matching or surpassing their multiyear rate from 2016-17, with the biggest jump coming from football, whose multiyear rate jumped 16 points from 953 to 969. Another significant improvement came from the men's basketball program, which saw its multiyear rate go from 955 a year ago to its current total of 965. The men's tennis and softball programs also enjoyed double-digit improvements in their multiyear rates, with the tennis program leaping 15 points from 948 to 963 and the softball program moving from 969 to 980.
"There is a lot to celebrate in this report and it's a credit to our coaches, to Marilyn Middlebrook and her staff in the Academic Enrichment Center and to the student-athletes themselves that so many of our programs are achieving at a high level," OSU Athletic Director Mike Holder said. "Kudos to Alan Bratton and the golf program for maintaining a perfect multi-year score and to Mike Gundy, Mike Boynton, Jay Udwadia, Courtney Jones and Kenny Gajewski for leading their respective programs to perfect scores this past academic year."
