Cowgirls Walk-Off No. 16 Baylor Twice
April 13, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team swept a doubleheader against No. 16 Baylor on Friday at Cowgirl Stadium, walking-off the Lady Bears with a 14-6 run-rule victory and a 2-1 come-from-behind win.
Oklahoma State (31-12; 9-2 Big 12) has now beaten Baylor in each of the teams' previous four meetings dating back to the series in Waco, Texas, last year.
"Obviously a great day for us and anytime you can win two from a conference team, it's a big day," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "These are big games and we're going into this last four or five weeks and our schedule is really good. Just really proud of this group."
The Cowgirls had plenty of solid at-bats against BU ace Gia Rodoni in Friday's nightcap, but found themselves in a 1-0 hole heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Maddi Holcomb started the OSU rally with her second infield single of the contest. Vanessa Shippy followed suit with a high chopper over the third baseman's head to give the Cowgirls a pair of runners with only one out. Former travel ball teammates Taylor Lynch and Madi Sue Montgomery scored the two runners on base with gritty at-bats that resulted in an error at second to score Holcomb, and a soft grounder to second that allowed Shippy to dart home and seal the Cowgirls' second-walk off win of the day.
The script was flipped in the opener for the OSU offense, as the Cowgirls racked up 16 hits, including a trio of home runs, to run-rule the Lady Bears in five innings.
Madi Sue Montgomery provided the first two home runs of the day for OSU, smacking a two-run shot in the bottom of the first. Her blast opened the scoring, and she followed it up with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third that gave the Cowgirls a 5-1 lead.
Montgomery's home runs were her 11th and 12th of the season, bringing her into a tie for the fifth-most home runs hit by a Cowgirl in a single season. She also now has blasted 22 career home runs, tying her for ninth in OSU history.
OSU's final home run of Friday's opener was supplied by Jessi Haffner.
It was a three-run blast which found its way over the wall in right field, and was Haffner's ninth of the year. The home run capped off a six-run fifth inning that lifted OSU to a 14-6 run-rule victory.
The walk-off shot was the 54th home run of the season hit by Oklahoma State, marking a new team single-season home run record. OSU's previous record of 53 home runs came in 2016, during head coach Kenny Gajewksi's first season in charge of the program.
Oklahoma State's series-opening win marked the 100th victory for Gajewski as head coach of the Cowgirls.
OSU and Baylor will look to wrap up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium. First pitch on FOX Sports Plus is scheduled for 4 p.m.. The teams will play the finale on Sunday at 12 p.m. if Saturday's matchup cannot be played due to inclement weather in the Stillwater area.
