STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team earned the program's first three-game sweep of No. 16 Baylor on Sunday, defeating the Lady Bears 5-1 at Cowgirl Stadium.
The win marks the first time that OSU (32-12; 10-2 Big 12) has swept Baylor since 2011, when the Cowgirls won a two-game set between the teams. Sunday's triumph also marked the first time since 2003 that OSU has bested BU three times in a single season, and it was the Cowgirls' fifth-straight win over the Lady Bears, which is the second longest streak in team history.
"A good weekend and obviously I'm very proud of our kids," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought we played well. Not perfect, but well enough, and pitched well again. We just continue that, and that's kind of who we have been. They keep us in every single game. We jumped out and got a lead, and they held it."
Oklahoma State pounced on Baylor early in Sunday's contest, scoring a trio of runs in the first inning thanks to four consecutive Cowgirl hits to open the game.
Vanessa Shippy delivered the first hit of the day with a single to second base. Her infield hit marked the 24th time in OSU's last 29 contests that Shippy has reached base as the Cowgirls' first batter of the game. It also extended her streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 37, which is a career high for the senior.
Taylor Lynch quickly drove Shippy home with a single to center that bounced away from the defender, and Madi Sue Montgomery followed suit with a double down the right-field line to score Lynch. Montgomery's RBI was her team-leading 53rd of the year and she would later score her 37th run of the year on Chelsea Alexander's grounder to first.
The Cowgirls continued their offensive outpour in the second inning, tacking on two more runs that were supplied by a pair of RBI singles from freshman Sydney Pennington and senior Whitney Whitehorn.
Pennington and Whitehorn's run-scoring efforts opened up a 5-0 lead for Oklahoma State, and that was more than enough run support for Samantha Clakley in the circle.
Clakley dominated a Baylor offense that led the Big 12 in batting average entering the weekend, as she pitched 6.2 innings of one-run ball. The right-hander gave up just five hits, walked two batters and struck out two en route to improving her record to 12-5 on the year.
She has not walked more than two batters in her last 20 appearances.
Clakley kept the Lady Bears off the basepath for the most part, but she did also get some help from her defense, including a home-run robbery from Maddi Holcomb in center field that kept two Baylor runs off the board in the top of the third.
Baylor's Shelby Friudenberg - the Lady Bears' all-time home runs leader - smacked a pitch high and hard to center field, but Holcomb made the leap at the wall and snagged it for the third out of the frame, swinging even more momentum in the Cowgirls' favor.
"I've always had a goal of robbing a home run at OSU, so that's number one," Holcomb said of where the robbery ranks among her best catches in the outfield. "I was kind of going back on it and didn't know if I really had a chance. Then I heard Chelsea (Alexander) counting down and I thought "I actually might have this" and that's why the timing was so perfect - because of her counting down - so I'm thankful for her."
Sunday's matchup in Stillwater also marked the first Nike N7 Field Day at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Cowgirls donned turquoise uniforms for the occasion and had a pair of honorary first pitches thrown by Dr. John Chaney - an OSU Psychology faculty member - and Cowboy basketball's Lindy Waters III, both of whom have Native American backgrounds. Five members of the OSU softball roster - Mallory Goodman, Taylor Pence, Sydney Pennington, Michaela Richbourg and Whitney Whitehorn - come from Native American families.
Oklahoma State is the second softball program in the country to join the Nike N7 movement, joining Oregon State in that exclusive group.
"It's a cool deal for us and something we're going to keep doing," Gajewski said. "Being where we are and being from our area, we're always going to have Native American kids on our team, so I think it's awesome. I'm sure for our girls, it'll get to where it is with basketball and they'll always want to wear these jerseys, so it's something we'll definitely keep doing moving forward."
Gajewski and the Cowgirls will now shift gears again as they get set for a quartet of tough road games in the upcoming week. OSU will first travel to Wichita State on Wednesday before traveling to Austin for a three-game set against the Texas Longhorns, who currently sit at 9-0 in conference play this year.
