With Academics First, Chen Leads Cowgirl Golf Into Stanford Intercollegiate
October 18, 2018 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER - Senior Chih-Min Chen is on track to make the prestigious Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Golf Team for the fourth year in a row, which has only been accomplished by two Cowgirls before.
Karin Kinnerud and Pernilla Lindberg are the two other Cowgirls to receive the award, both getting their fourth WGCA All-Scholars Award in 2009.
The qualifications to receive the WGCA All-American Scholar Award include maintaining an overall grade point average of 3.50 or higher, being of high moral character and in good standing at the college, and playing in 50 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Chen accredits most of her success in college to the rigorous coursework she received in Taiwan during high school.
"Where I'm from, school is really difficult. I feel like when they come here, a lot of people say, 'Oh, college is really different from high school,' but for me, it's kind of the same," Chen said.
On top of her academic background, Chen is also a very time-oriented student. She stresses time management to be one of her keys to success.
"I tell my teammates if you manage your time well, you'll do just fine. Planning ahead is important, too," Chen said.
Chen shows she is driven in other places besides the classroom. Head Coach Courtney Jones said Chen is a true "leader by example" for the cowgirls.
"She'll get up early and go to practice, go back in and go to class, and come back out and practice again. She wants to go out there and try to be her best," Jones said.
Chen's ability to manage her time as a student athlete will have another chance to shine as she and the Cowgirls head to Palo Alto, California to play in the Stanford Intercollegiate Tournament.
