July 09, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
SAARLOUIS, Germany – Oklahoma State tennis' Tristan Meraut captured his first title on the ITF Futures tour Sunday, as he defeated Alexis Gautier in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to claim the Saarland Open 2017 crown.
Meraut advanced through three rounds of qualifying play at the $15,000 Futures tournament before storming through five more opponents on his way to the title. All eight of Meraut's wins were in straight sets, which includes a 6-2, 6-2 win over eighth-seeded Christoph Negritu (Germany) in the semifinals.
Meraut's triumph in Germany comes after arguably his best season competing at Oklahoma State.
During the 2016-17 campaign, the Frenchman posted a 16-7 (13-3 duals) record in singles competition. He also was unbeaten for a three-month stretch of the dual-match season, as he won 12 straight matches from January 28 to April 28. The right-hander will return to Oklahoma State this fall for his senior season, where he will looking to continue to build on the recent success he has had both in the United States and around the world.
Meraut was not the only Cowboy competing in the Saarland Open this year, however, as former Oklahoma State tennis star Lucas Gerch joined him in the field.
Gerch, like his former teammate, also advanced to the main draw with three wins in qualifying action. The left-hander then defeated Denys Mylokostov (Ukraine) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, before falling in the Round of 16 to his fellow German, Paul Woerner.
The former Cowboy graduated from Oklahoma State this past May and left as one of the program's most decorated competitors. His 81 career singles wins rank as the fifth-highest total in team history. When coupling his singles success with his 71 career doubles triumphs, Gerch ranks as the third-winningest Cowboy of the Big 12 era with 152 total victories.
