Oklahoma State Track and Field Honored by USTFCCCA for Academic Success
July 28, 2017 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
NEW ORLEANS – The Oklahoma State track and field program was recognized for its academic success by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week, as both the men's and women's teams were honored as 2017 All-Academic Teams and 14 student-athletes received All-Academic Individual recognition.
In order to be a 2017 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, a program must finish highly at the respective national championship meet and have at least a 3.00 cumulative team GPA.
To qualify for the individual academic honor, a student-athlete must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and have either participated in any round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, including prelims; or finished the regular indoor season in the NCAA top 96 in an individual event or in the top 48 as a member of a relay team.
Four Cowboys, Ryan Smeeton, Anthony Grogan Jr., Craig Nowak and Bradley Johnson were among those selected.
Nowak is no stranger to academic success, as he has been honored on the First-Team Academic All-Big 12 Team for track and field and was most recently named the Big 12's Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's track and field.
Johnson and Grogan Jr., also earned First-Team Academic All-Big 12 Team for track and field earlier this year.
On the women's side, 10 Cowgirls made the prestigious list, including Ambra Wesley, Savannah Camacho, Stephanie Ferrante, Chelsea Jarvis, Jennifer Celis, Molly Sughroue and Clara Nichols.
The list also included NCAA Outdoor Championship contenders Kaylee Dodd, Kaela Edwards and Ieva Zarankaite.
Edwards graduated from OSU in the spring with a 3.47 GPA for the year and degree in Marketing. Her accomplishments in the classroom were just as noteworthy as her success on the track. She earned a first-team All-America honor indoors in the mile and won her first Big 12 outdoor title when she took the 1,500-meter at the Big 12 Championships.
This honor adds to Camacho, Dodd, Edwards, Nichols and Sughroue's academic achievements for the year, as they also earned First-Team Academic All-Big 12 honors for both track and field and cross country.
