Cash Falls on Day One of NCAA Singles Championship
May 24, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – Oklahoma State tennis' Julian Cash was knocked out of the NCAA Singles Championship on Wednesday, as the right-hander was bested in the first round by No. 14 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Virginia), 6-4, 6-4.
Cash finishes the season with an 18-11 (13-7 duals) mark in singles action. The Brighton, England native also defeated nine ranked opponents during the 2016-17 campaign, with five of those foes holding spots in the top-50 of the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Singles Rankings.
Cash dropped a break point early in his first set against Kwiatkowski, but battled back to make it a tight match against the nation's 14th-ranked player. As the two traded service throughout the early portion of the match, weather intervened and play was stopped with Kwiatkowski serving 4-3. After a two-hour delay, the competitors returned to the court and Kwiatkowski quickly seized momentum as he held serve twice to snag the first set from the Cowboy.
The second set mirrored the first, as Kwiatkowski broke Cash again to open the set and then the top-30 foes traded games before Cash ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-4.
Cash will be back in action tomorrow for the NCAA Doubles Championship with Arjun Kadhe. The All-American tandem was selected as a top-eight seed for this year's tournament and will face Southern California's No. 14-ranked Brandon Holt and Riley Smith at 4:30 p.m. CT.
