Fourth-Ranked Cowboys Blank San Diego State in Stillwater
March 12, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The fourth-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team recorded its fifth shutout of the season on Sunday, as the Cowboys defeated San Diego State, 4-0, at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
Oklahoma State (13-3; 0-0 Big 12) has now won five straight matches, with four of those victories coming against top-30 opponents. Sunday's victory also marks the fourth-straight season that the Cowboys have won at least 13 of their first 16 matches.
"It was a good win for us," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "San Diego State is a very good team, but I thought that we came out ready to go in doubles and then carried that momentum through into singles. It was a much more straight-forward performance for us and I'm much happier than I was after Friday's match."
OSU, like it has throughout the season, used doubles play as a chance to gain the early advantage in the match, as they picked up wins at the two and three positions to secure the doubles point. It was the 13th time this season that the Pokes have claimed the all-important point, with OSU posting a 12-1 record in those matches.
Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza, ranked No. 71 in the nation, were the first to secure victory in doubles on Sunday. The duo knocked off SDSU's Santiago Cevallos and Sander Gjoles-Andersen, 6-2, to earn its 11th win of the season. Gerch and Mendoza's win was followed up shortly thereafter by Lukas Finzelberg and Artur Dubinski, who defeated Rafael Gonzalez-Almazan and Joel Popov by the same 6-2 score to clinch the point.
In the ensuing singles action, the Cowboys quickly polished off the match with victories on courts one, three and four.
Julian Cash, ranked No. 22 in the nation, kicked into high gear midway through his first set against Mark Goles-Babic, winning the final three games to gain the early edge. The right-hander continued his form in the second set, finishing off his ninth straight-set victory of the season, 6-2, 6-2. Cash's win marks his 14th singles victory of the year and ties him with his doubles partner, Arjun Kadhe, for the team high.
After Cash's win, the Cowboys' lead quickly grew to 3-0 as Lukas Finzelberg put away Sander Gjoles-Andersen on court three, 6-3, 6-3. Finzelberg's win was his 12th of the season and the 40th singles victory of the senior's Oklahoma State career.
OSU then sealed the shutout with another straight-set victory from Artur Dubinski, who bested Santiago Cevallos, 6-4, 6-4. Dubinski, a sophomore, has won six singles contests since joining the Cowboys in February, which includes two match-clinching victories.
Up next for the Cowboys is a road trip to Las Vegas for a St. Patrick's Day-doubleheader against UNLV and Montana. OSU is 9-5 all-time against UNLV, which includes victories over the Rebels in each of the past two seasons. Meanwhile, next Friday will see the Cowboys square off with Montana for the first time.
