Cowboys Sweep Doubleheader and Extend Winning Streak to Seven
March 17, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
LAS VEGAS – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team extended its winning streak to seven as the fifth-ranked Cowboys knocked off both UNLV and Montana, 4-1 and 4-0, respectively, on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Cowboys' seven-match winning streak is the squad's longest since winning 11-straight matches from January 29 to March 19 last season. OSU (15-3; 0-0 Big 12) is now 4-0 in true road matches this season, which is the Cowboys' best mark to since starting the 2013-14 season 4-0 as well.
Friday's matches saw OSU continue to showcase its doubles prowess, as the Cowboys picked up wins on courts one and two to secure the doubles point against UNLV.
Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe, ranked No. 3 in the nation, were the first to strike on Saturday. The All-American duo blitzed past UNLV's Jakob Amilon and Evaldo Neto, 6-3. Cash and Kadhe's win is their 21st of the season and the 55th time they have been victorious since forming their partnership at the start of last season.
The Cowboy's win on court one was quickly followed by Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza on the adjacent court, as the nation's No. 71-ranked tandem defeated Courtney Lock and Ruben Alberts, 6-4, to earn its 11th win of the season and secure the doubles point.
Oklahoma State continued to roll the Rebels in singles play, picking up wins on courts one, four and six to secure the victory.
Julian Cash was again the first Cowboy to put a win on the board, picking up his team-high 15th singles victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jakob Amilon.
Cash has now won six-straight singles contests dating back to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over then-No. 5 Christian Sigsgaard of Texas in OSU's final match at the ITA National Indoor Championship.
Playing on court four for the first time time this season, Lukas Finzelberg quickly added another point to the Cowboys' total as he dropped Evaldo Neto in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Finzelberg's win was followed up by Jurence Mendoza on court six, where the junior bested Richard Solberg, 6-1, 6-4, to seal the Cowboys' fourth road victory of the season.
In the nightcap against Montana, OSU continued to cruise as the Cowboys swept the Grizzlies, 4-0, in just over 90 minutes.
The Cowboys fielded an entirely different doubles lineup in their second match of the day, but the results were the same as OSU picked up wins at the one and two positions to secure the point for a second time on Friday.
Partnering for the first time in a dual match this season, Jurence Mendoza and Mathieu Scaglia looked like a well-oiled machine as they cruised to a 6-0 win over UM's Alex Canellopoulos and Yannick Schmidl.
Their victory was followed up by Lucas Gerch and Arjun, who were playing in their first match together since winning the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship two weeks ago. Much like they did in La Jolla, California, the senior tandem rolled to a doubles-point-securing 6-2 victory over Max Korkh and Peter Mimnagh-Fleming.
The win marked Kadhe's second doubles victory of the day and brought the right-hander's career total to 96. He is now just four wins shy of becoming the first Cowboy in program history to reach 100 career doubles wins.
Kadhe continued to play on the front foot in singles action, as the right-hander dropped just three games in a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win over Victor Casadevall. Prior to Kadhe's victory, Tristan Meraut continued his recent string of success by besting Max Korkh, 6-0, 6-1, to extend his winning streak to seven.
Oklahoma State's clinching point came from Lukas Finzelberg, who earned his second win of the day by defeating Yannick Schmidl, 6-2, 6-2. Finzelberg's wins on Friday bring him to 14 for the season, putting him one shy of Cash and Kadhe for the team high in singles.
The Cowboys will continue the non-conference portion of their schedule next week when they host Wichita State at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on Thursday, March 23, at 5 p.m.
