AMES, Iowa – Jawun Evans scored 29 points and added six assists and four rebounds in Oklahoma State's 86-83 loss on Tuesday night against No. 24 Iowa State.
Jeffrey Carroll posted a game-high 10 rebounds on the night, which is his sixth career game with double-digit rebounds. Brandon Averette registered five assists, which tied his career high from OSU's last matchup with the Cyclones in January.
Leyton Hammonds had 19 points, including 5-of-9 from the 3-point, and Phil Forte III added 12 for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys led, 46-40, with 17:50 left in the game, but a 21-5 run put the Cyclones ahead for good with 12:06 remaining.
Monte Morris forced a turnover under his own basket with 7.7 seconds left and Oklahoma State looking for a game-tying 3 -- and Thomas hit an easy layup off Morris' inbounds pass. Oklahoma State's Evans then hit a 3, but Donovan Jackson hit a free throw and Evans couldn't get a desperation heave off before the buzzer.
Evans made Iowa State sweat it out though. He was fouled from 3-point range with 13.8 seconds to go and the Cowboys down four. Evans hit all three from the line, but Nazareth Mitrou-Long answered with two free throws to make it 83-80 5 seconds later.
Matt Thomas put up 25 points against the Cowboys, and Iowa State seniors Deonte Burton and Mitrou-Long had 20 points and 17 points, respectively. Morris added 12 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for the Cyclones
The loss to the Cyclones snapped OSU's five-game winning streak, but the Cowboys have won 10 of their last 12 games heading into Saturday's showdown with No. 1/1 Kansas. OSU had won its previous five road games, which was tied with Kansas for the longest road winning streak among power conference schools.
Oklahoma State's free throw streak ended at 35 straight makes, which is a new OSU school record and is tied for the longest streak in Big 12 history.
OSU finished the month of February with a 6-2 record. Only eight OSU teams over the last 60 seasons had a better February.
Up Next:
The Cowboys will return home for their final home game of the season, and pay tribute to a pair of seniors - Phil Forte III and Leyton Hammonds - as OSU hosts No. 1/1 Kansas. Tipoff from GIA is slated for 5 p.m. on ESPN and the Cowboy Radio Network.
