Cowboys Drop No. 13 Northwestern, Sweep Weekend Road Trip
February 26, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
EVANSTON, Ill. – The eighth-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team polished off its Big Ten road trip on Sunday, as the Cowboys rolled through No. 13 Northwestern, 4-1, at the Combe Tennis Center.
The Cowboys (10-3, 0-0 Big 12) have now won all three of their road matches this season, with two of those victories coming against top-25 opponents. Sunday's win is also OSU's second over Northwestern in the past nine days, as the Cowboys defeated the Wildcats, 4-2, in the opening round of last weekend's ITA National Indoor Championship.
Mirroring last week's matchup, Oklahoma State picked up wins at the one and three positions to secure the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead.
Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe, ranked No. 4 in the nation, were the first Cowboys to finish their match on Sunday. The duo knocked off Northwestern's Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba by the same 6-4 score that they did a week ago. Cash and Kadhe have now won 19 matches this season and have posted a 9-1 mark in dual matches this spring.
Oklahoma State clinched the doubles point after Artur Dubinski and Tristan Meraut dropped Chris Ephorn and Ben Vandixhorn, 6-4, on court three. Dubinski and Meraut's win marked the duo's first victory as a tandem this season.
Dubinski and Meraut continued to find success in the ensuing singles action, as they both picked up straight-set wins to push Oklahoma State's lead to 3-0.
Meraut, riding a wave of momentum from his comeback victory on Friday against Minnesota, was the first Cowboy to win his matchup. The junior bested Ben Vandixhorn, 6-1, 6-2, on court five to give OSU its second point of the match.
Dubinski followed shortly thereafter, dropping Northwestern's Dominik Stary in straight sets for the second straight week, 6-3, 6-4. Sunday's singles win marks the fourth for Dubinski in his short time at Oklahoma State.
The Wildcats tallied a point with a win on court six, but Arjun Kadhe delivered the Cowboys' clinching point minutes later on court two. Kadhe dropped the first set in his matchup with Konrad Zieba, ranked No. 40 in the nation, but stormed back to snag the final two sets and lock up OSU's 10th win of the season. The senior won 12 of the final 15 games, including nine straight between the second and third sets, to win, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Next week, Oklahoma State heads to the west coast to square off with No. 9 Michigan in La Jolla, California on Thursday at 4 p.m CT. The Cowboys will then take part in the 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, which also begins on Thursday. An OSU tandem has won the prestigious tournament in each of the past two seasons, with Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe capturing the title last year.
