Last Time Out
The last weekend of the regular season for the Oklahoma State track and field program produced two of the best marks of the year and several memorable moments.
The weekend opened with Kaylee Dodd running a lifetime best in the 800-meter run, clocking a 2:04.68 and winning the event at the Arkansas Qualifier Friday.
Dodd was entered as a rabbit in the race, but finished strong to run the 15th-best time in the NCAA this season.
The next day in South Bend, Indiana, the Cowboy distance medley relay team had a new look and ran a new conference-leading time of 9:28.83.
Senior All-American and anchor-leg Josh Thompson was joined by Craig Nowak for the opening-leg, Brandon Singleton for the 400-meter leg and Bradley Johnson for the 800-meter leg.
The Cowboys won their heat, finished third overall and secured an NCAA bid.
A Look Back - Big 12 Championships
The 2016 Big 12 Indoor Championships was one of the best overall conference meets in school history for both Cowboy and Cowgirl squads.
The men's team won its second team title in three years and the Cowgirls finished in second and scored the most points at a conference championship in OSU history.
Josh Thompson and Kaela Edwards gave both teams the mile and 1,000-meter sweep, while Craig Nowak and Ingeborg Loevnes swept the men's and women's 3,000-meter runs for OSU.
The Cowboys scored 130 points to outpace defending champion Texas to the team title by 1.5 points.
It was the tightest margin of victory ever at a Big 12 Championship meet.
Cowboys "Run" The Big 12
Since 2013, the Cowboys have dominated the conference in running events at indoor championships, scoring 358.5 points across the 12 running events.
Most of the Cowboys' points have come from the 1,000-meter run, the mile and 3,000-and 5,000-meter runs. With 254 points from those four events, the Pokes would still be the third-highest scoring team in the four-year span.
OSU has also won nine individual titles in the four events, more than any other Big 12 team since 2013.
Texas is second in points scored in running events with 301 and is the only other team with more the 300 points scored. Texas and OSU have split the last four Big 12 indoor titles.
Star Seniors Lead the Way at Indoor Championships
For several Cowboys and Cowgirls, this weekend's Big 12 Championships appearance will be their final indoor conference meet.
Two-year Cowboy Josh Thompson comes into the weekend as one to watch after he won two individual titles in his first conference appearance last year.
Kaela Edwards and Savannah Camacho have been one of the most dominating duos in the conference in recent history, scoring 97 points between them at three indoor meets and winning five Big 12 indoor titles.
Craig Nowak won his first Big 12 title for the Cowboys in the thrilling 3,000-meter run at last year's indoor championships, but comes into the meet this year with a sub-four minute mile and an outdoor conference title under his belt.
The four senior stars have been a part of one of the most successful periods in OSU history and while most will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships and still have outdoor eligibility, their last indoor meet is a special one.
My, Oh Mile
The mile run has been the Cowboys' bread and butter since 2014. They have won the event title at the Big 12 Indoor Championships each of the past three years and scored a total of 56 points in that one event, ahead of second-place Oklahoma with 50.
Clocking a sub-four minute mile is the standard for excellence. While OU has two and Texas and Texas Tech both have one since 2013, the Cowboys have had 16 times faster than four minutes in that five year span.
This year, Josh Thompson, Matthew Fayers and Craig Nowak have each broken four minutes. They're the only athletes in the conference to do so in 2017 and they have put OSU in elite company as one of four programs to have more than two sub-four minute milers this year with Colorado, Michigan and Syracuse.
Those four programs account for 12 of the 26 fastest mile times in the NCAA this year, with Thompson's 3:56.89 sitting at fourth among collegians.
Magnani, Haines to Represent USA
Oklahoma State freshman Michelle Magnani won the U.S. Women's Junior Cross Country title in 22:36 at the USATF National Cross Country Championships Saturday in Bend, Oregon.
Magnani outran a talented field of American women in the 6K en rout to the national title, and, with the win, earned a spot on the U.S. Junior team that will compete at the World Championships in Kampala, Uganda on March 26.
Cowboy Freshman Alec Haines finished seventh in the men's junior 8K race in 26:35 to also earn a spot on Team USA with former Cowboy Shadrack Kipchirchir who finished third in the men's senior race.
Magnani and Haines are the second pair of OSU athletes to compete at the USA Championships in the past two years. Current Cowboys Ben Butler and Christian Liddell finished third and seventh at the Championship race in 2016.
Edwards Added to Bowerman Watch List
Kaela Edwards' latest accomplishment in her senior season was a Cowgirl first as she made the Bowerman Award Watch List.
It was the first time a Cowgirl has ever made the prestigious list, and puts OSU in some elite company in NCAA track and field.
With Edwards now making the list, OSU is the 57th team of the 132 Division I programs to earn a women's Bowerman nod.
Last year, NCAA champions Chad Noelle and Nick Miller represented the Cowboys on the list and German Fernandez was a finalist for the award in 2010.
