February 18, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 11th-seeded Oklahoma State men's tennis team was knocked out of the ITA National Indoor Championship main draw on Saturday, as the Cowboys fell to No. 3 Ohio State, 4-0, in the tournament's quarterfinals.
The Cowboys (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) are now 3-2 against ranked competition this season, with both of those losses coming against top-three ranked opponents. Oklahoma State's losses this season can also be identified by the two occasions that the Cowboys weren't able to secure the doubles point.
OSU came close to securing the all-important point once again on Saturday, but tough losses at the two and three positions saw the Cowboys fall behind 1-0 for the second time this season.
Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza, ranked No. 50 in the nation, were the first to fall on Friday, as the were knocked off by by 25th-ranked Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce, 6-2. On court three, Lukas Finzelberg and Artur Dubinski were in full control of their matchup against Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert, but ultimately dropped the match, 7-5.
In the ensuing singles action, Oklahoma State put up a fight on several courts, with Arjun Kadhe, Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza all able to snag the first set against the Buckeyes. Ohio State picked up wins at one, two and four to polish off its victory before those matches could finish.
Ohio State doubled its lead to 2-0 with a win on court one, as second-ranked Mikael Torpegaard dropped Julian Cash, ranked No. 32 in the nation, 6-1, 6-1. The Buckeyes quickly tallied another point just minutes later when No. 8 Hugo Di Feo went over No. 48 Lukas Finzelberg, 6-0, 6-2.
The Buckeyes locked up the match with a victory on court four, as No. 47 Herkko Pollanen bested Oklahoma State-newcomer Artur Dubinski, 6-0, 6-4.
Oklahoma State will wrap up its week at national indoors tomorrow morning in a consolation match against either Big 12-rival Texas or No. 2 Wake Forest at 9 a.m. ET.
The Longhorns are the No. 10 seed at this week's tournament and the only Big 12 team currently ranked above the Cowboys in the ITA Rankings. OSU has already squared off with the Demon Deacons this season, dropping a hard-fought contest, 4-3, in Stillwater last Sunday.
