Cowboys Conclude Play at ITA National Indoors
February 19, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 11th-seeded Oklahoma State men's tennis team concluded its week of play at the ITA National Indoor Championship on Sunday, as the Cowboys fell to 10th-seeded Texas, 4-2, in consolation play. The match concludes a stretch in which the Cowboys faced four top-15 ranked teams, including two of the nation's top three, in a week's time.
Despite Sunday's tough loss, however, the Cowboys' doubles prowess was on display once again, as OSU (8-3, 0-0 Big 12) picked up wins on courts one and two to secure the doubles point for the ninth time this season.
Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza, ranked No. 50 in the nation, were the first to claim victory against the Longhorns, as the duo dropped No. 27 Yuya Ito and Harrison Scott, 6-3. The pair's win was quickly followed up by Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe on court one, with the nation's fifth-ranked tandem besting Texas' George Goldhoff and Leo Telles, 6-2.
The Cowboys' No. 1 and No. 2 doubles duos have combined to win 25 matches this season, including 10 against ranked competition.
Texas leveled the match at 1-1 in singles play after winning on court four, but Julian Cash put the Pokes back on top with a straight-set victory over No. 5 Christian Sigsgaard on court one.
Cash stormed out of the gates against the Longhorn, as he broke Sigsgaard in the early stages of the first set to go up 4-1. The junior used his strong service and pinpoint returns to press on and snag the first set.
In the second set, the two heavyweights opened with a sequence of exchanged service before Cash was again able to secure the crucial break point. Cash, serving for match point, continued to hammer away before finally locking up his 10th singles win of the season, 6-3, 6-4.
Cash's victory over Sigsgaard also marks the first time that the Brighton, England native has dropped a top-five opponent during his time at Oklahoma State. He has now beaten 12 ranked competitors since joining the Cowboys prior to last season.
The back-and-forth affair between the two Big 12 rivals continued on court three, as Arjun Kadhe and No. 58 Harrison Scott split sets, with the Longhorn taking the first and the Cowboy sweeping the second.
Kadhe and Scott continued to trade games in the decisive third, but the No. 58-ranked Scott was able to snag a break point and then hold serve to go up 5-3 late in the set. Kadhe followed with a powerful ace to hold serve and get back to 5-4, but the senior wasn't able to get the necessary break point thereafter and fell to Scott, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
Texas added a third point to its tally just moments later, picking up a 6-3, 6-3 win from Rodrigo Banzer on court six. The Longhorns then locked up their victory on court two, as George Goldhoff held off a late charge from OSU's Lukas Finzelberg to win in three sets, 2-6,7-5, 6-3.
Oklahoma State now faces a Big Ten road trip next weekend, where the Cowboys are set to square off with Minnesota on Friday night at 6 p.m. OSU will then head just a few hours south for a rematch with No. 7 Northwestern on Sunday at noon.
