Oklahoma State Game Notes
The Basics
Oklahoma State is off to a 7-2 start with both losses coming to teams currently ranked in the top 10 of both polls. The Cowboys employ a high-pressure defense that has forced at least 19 turnovers in each of its last three outings and is holding opponents to 40.2 percent shooting on the year. Now the Cowboys head to the Sunshine state for the Orange Bowl Classic to take on another ranked foe in No. 19/19 Florida State, which is one of just six unbeaten teams in college basketball.
On the Air
The matchup between the Cowboys and Seminoles will air on Fox Sports 2 at 1 p.m. Central. The play-by-play team of Justin Kutcher, Bob Wenzel and Jessica Blaylock will handle the on-air duties. FoxSportsGo will carry the webcast. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
Cowboy Quick Hitters
• Jeffrey Carroll is only 15 points away from becoming the 41st player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The senior has scored 985 career points and has 16 career 20-point performances to his credit.
• Mitchell Solomon's field goal streak might have ended against Wichita State, but not before the big man hit 17 straight shots over the last five games. On the year, the senior is shooting 80.6 percent inside the 3-point arch, which ranks 11th nationally according to KenPom.
• Sophomore sharpshooter and Tampa native Thomas Dziagwa is 24-of-50 (.500) from 3-point, which ranks sixth in the Big 12 and 37th nationally. Dziagwa is now 47-of-103 (.456) from 3-point over his career, and will qualify for the OSU career 3-point percentage record with his 50th make. The current record holder is Sean Sutton, who connected on 44.4 percent of his 3-pointers from 1990-92.
• Brandon Averette is one of the country's most efficient point guards, and ranks 15th in the country with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.67.
• OSU is tops in the Big 12 and ninth nationally in free throw shooting at 79.4 percent.
Man In The Middle
The Cowboys are expected to receive a major boost of athleticism with the addition of St. John's transfer Yankuba Sima, who is expected to be in uniform against Florida State. The 6-11 center is a shot-blocking specialist who swatted 60 shots for the Red Storm as a freshman. Sima's 2.4 blocks per game ranked 22nd in the NCAA in 2015-16, and were the ninth most by any player in St. John's history. To put Sima's 2.4 blocks per game in perspective, only four players in Oklahoma State history have ever averaged more than 2.0 per game for a season. Sima led the Red Storm with 5.7 boards per game and also managed 7.3 points on 48.7 percent shooting.
Leonard Hamilton Ties
Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton is a veteran of over 500 career wins, and he got his head coaching start at Oklahoma State. In his four years as the head coach at OSU (1987-90) Hamilton was 56-63, including first-round wins in the NIT in both 1989 and 1990. Those trips to the NIT were the first back-to-back postseason appearances for the Cowboys since 1953-54. Current Kansas head coach Bill Self was a notable member of Hamilton's coaching staff in Stillwater.
Hot Start In Tallahassee
Florida State is off to a blistering start, and is one of just six remaining undefeated teams remaining in college basketball. The Seminoles are off to their best start since beginning the 2003-04 season 10-0, and have also won 25 straight on their home court.
The Series With The Seminoles
This will be just the second hardwood matchup between OSU and FSU, and the first since 1964. The two teams last met at a tournament hosted by Vanderbilt on Dec. 18, 1964, and OSU came away with a 60-56 win thanks to 14 points from Freddie Moulder and 13 points and 11 rebounds from James King.
Florida Cowboys
A pair of current Cowboys and a future Cowboy hail from the Sunshine State. Sophomore sharpshooter Thomas Dziagwa is a native of Temple Terrace, Fla., where he played at Tampa Catholic High School for this father, Don Dziagwa. Cowboy freshman Zack Dawson starred at South Miami High School last season, which is just 35 miles South of the BB&T Center. Cowboy signee Duncan Demuth, who will join OSU next season, is from Seminole, Fla.
